Camtasia - how to record a playing video?

Sounds like it could be an overlay thing. If you are using Windows Media Player open Options... select the Performance tab, click Advanced, and clear the checkmark from the "Use overlays" checkbox.

Note: This will allow you to playback/record copyrighted videos also. Not that you would ever want to do that kind of thing.
