I have seen some of these post about FT and others, but not about bodog. I recently reinstalled xp and was wondering if i lost my notes files or not. I did not reformat, but copying and pasting data folders into my new installation folder is coming up dry. Does anyone know where the player notes file is located and what its file name is?

I haven't checked lately.... but they were previously stored in the Windoze Registry.

The latest Bodog client software (v2.13.1.13, running on WinXP Pro SP2) stores player/opponent notes in the registry, as individual String (REG_SZ) values in the following Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bodog Poker\Game\Notes\YourBodogUserName
The strings (one for each opponent you've noted) are saved in the following format:

Name Type Data
BodogUser1 REG_SZ plaintext note about User1
BodogUser2 REG_SZ note about User2
... ... ...

The Registry was most likely overwritten when you re-installed XP, but if you didn't reformat your machine, you might be able to find an old (redundant, backup) copy of the registry that contains your player notes.

The XP registry is scattered across a number of files, the majority of which are located in %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Config\ (%SYSTEMROOT% is usually C:\WINDOWS)

If you reinstalled XP directly on top of your older installation (or if you performed a "repair" install), look in this directory for any obvious backup/archive files. For example, in my Config directory, there are 3 different copies of the SOFTWARE tree: SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE.sav, SOFTWARE.bak

Check the file dates to see if any of the backups are holdovers from before the re-install.

Other good places to check for old/backup copies of the SOFTWARE hive file:
  • %SYSTEMROOT%\Repair\
  • Emergency Repair Disk (if you made one)
  • the 'System Volume Information' directory (if you can access it, this folder often contains older registry hive files used with Windows Restore Points)
  • etc
If you have any backups, they would contain these files as well -- try to grab the most recent one (just prior to when you re-installed) so you're more likely to have *all* your old notes.

Anyway, once you get your hands on an older copy of your registry hive file(s), it's just a simple task of opening them up in an off-line Registry Editor, drilling down to HKU\Software\Bodog Poker\Game\Notes and copying that data over to your new/current registry.

There are several offline registry editors out there; google is your friend. The Ultimate Boot Disk for Windows is a *GREAT* resource for things like this -- last time I had to recover old registry info, I downloaded a copy of this (free, open source) tool and it had like 3 or 4 different editors (all GUI, all with full text search) available, worked like a charm. HIGHLY recommended.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps -- let me know if something in particular was unclear, otherwise, good luck! -cheers
