I will first apologize for such beginner questions, but please point me in the right direction. I take my poker seriously, have a good grasp for the game, and I'm profitable live and online, but no millionaire.

I don't really understand what the tracking software does?

After understanding what the software does, which one is the best that I can use on Poker Stars? Do I need to pay for this software?

I've looked through the forums, but I don't understand the lingo, can't seem to get a beginners explanation and how it's allowed on sites if it gives you such an advantage.

Thanks!

In general, what kind of tools and services are acceptable?

Holdem manager and Pocker Tracker both have trial version. I suggest you to try both and see which one you like the most.

Ok, so I downloaded PokerTracker and I'm running into a problem with Poker Stars. I click on "Begin Auto Import" for the HUD and it says the hands are being observed but not imported. I go to Poker Stars configuration and it says "Poker Stars is not configured to save hand history to disk". Does this mean I can't use the software with Poker Stars?

Just configure PS to save the HHs to your harddisk. (you can also request older HHs via mail) Then auto-import with HEM/PT out of this folder. Btw don't be surprised if there are no HHs left in the destinated folder after a session - HEM/PT move 'em to the database/archive after importing.

I'm not the most computer savy person in the world. How do I get the my computer to save the HHs to the hard disk? Thanks for the help!

Ok, one more thing.

The HUD display is in black so it covers my table and I can't see what is going on. Any advice to fix that?

Thanks for any help!

open pt3
menu at top:
Configure -> Configure HUD -> Group Tab

for both the popup and the stats, you can change the background color, but you probably just want to change the translucency to make it more transparent
