I've been trying to figure out how I had it set up previously when I did this. I've made the changes in my pg.hba and postgresql.conf file, set my firewall on both computers to accept queries from each other.

When I open HEM on comp 2, I can get postgres to run when I'm trying to access a local DB, but when I try to access the remote one, postgres won't start. Is anyone else running this configuration successfully? I don't want to run it off my external drive, but I want to access my DB on both computers easily.

I made it but had to change 2 things:

on postgresql.conf: listen_addresses: all
on pg_hba.conf: 192.168.1.0/24 considering I'm running on a local network using 192.168.1.xx IP addresses.

Then it worked.

I've done both those steps, but I can't get postgres to start on my non-database computer. I can get it to start when I try to create a database locally.

This should work like this. Are you sure you gave HEM the right IP address of the server? Can you ping the server?

Now I'm starting to find the issue. I can access my desktop shared files from my laptop, but not my laptop from desktop. It says access is denied. I can access my external HD which is run through my laptop's usb port.

I am running Vista on my laptop. I thought I had everything set to share files without a password. Do I need to create a user account? I'm a Vista rookie.

I got it now.

1) Windows Firewall somehow turned back on. It might have been when I was changing firewalls the other day. This was one problem.

2) In my config files, I had the IP addresses listed under ipv6 instead of ipv4, which XP uses AFAIK. Now, I can access it on my XP desktop.

It is probably safer to leave the firewall on but add an exception for port 5432. That way you still have the safety of a firewall.

It sounds like he had 2 firewalls on for a period of time.

....
I am assuming he added a new (Comodo) firewall, and the Windows firewall was still on (or got turned back on).

I also know OP pretty well, and knew he wouldn't be using Windows Firewall on purpose, but using something else instead.
