Doctor that is the head of medicare and medicaid says that 30 percent of the cost of the programs provide no benefit to patients, blames arcane regulations. Go govt!http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/238654.php

Surprised none of the other candidates said whether or not they would go to the Trump debate. Maybe they're waiting to see what Romney will do?

I also think Washington insiders are finally coming to the realization that Paul could win Iowa. If he does that, I wonder how much momentum he would have going into NH and how Mitt Romney would do there?

Could Newt win South Carolina without winning Iowa and getting a possible 3rd in NH? I think we might be headed for a brokered convention.

Pretty much every government program intended to aid the poor/elderly or distribute wealth has an absurd portion of the funds at its disposal gobbled up by the bureaucracy running it. The question I have is if the problem can even be solved and if it isn't just a foregone conclusion that bureaucracy will be wasteful and just grow itself uselessly.
12-04-2011 , 05:26 PM
You realise he advocates solving the problem by adopting a lot of what we do here in Britain, right? Which is socialised healthcare.

This isnt a "government is bad at everything" statement he is making, its a "the US government is bad at healthcare" statement.

I don't know about that, but I do know the Secret Service will get busier all of a sudden. They may assign more people to Paul than they do to Obama.

been outta the loop, cain really dropped out?
12-04-2011 , 05:52 PM
Suspended his campaign. Which means he has but he can still take donations apparently.

You may ask who would donate to Cain now, but to that i ask who would donate to Cain last week, lol.
12-04-2011 , 05:56 PM
lol phill

can he just pocket the donations?
12-04-2011 , 06:03 PM
Just watched Cain's ad and listened to the I am America song twice. Gonna miss that guy...
12-04-2011 , 06:09 PM
I assume he will use the donations to continue his book tour highlighting issues around the country.

I have always wanted to research the overhead cost in government ``charities``, i.e. social programs, vs. the overhead cost of private charities. My understanding is that non-government charities burn a lot of their money in bureaucratic activities as well.

You frame Romney in such positive terms, yet go on to claim that it's Obama's political "philosophy" you loathe, when any sensible observer not drowning in partisan emotion would judge that Obama's governance and presidential term so far have run a pretty damn centrist course (as Romney's would, more or less) and even steered hawkishly / light-social-conservatively on some things. This is the terrible, loathsome behavior that so troubles you? You come off as just another cheerleading ideologue.

Was watching this guy I like on youtube. He is now self employed because he makes enough from youtube. However, he mentioned more of his money gets taxed to the government now then when he was employed by a company. Does that make any sense? I thought the government was supposed to encourage entrepreneurship?

When you file self-employed you have to pay self-employment tax which is basically SS and Medicare tax. I've always filed SE but my guess is that the employer bears the brunt of some of those costs so your paycheck is probably taxed at a lower rate than whatever your rate is being SE (but obviously the company factors in whatever taxes they may pay on your behalf into your salary so meh).

If you're employed then the payroll taxes are split 50/50 but if you're self employed you pay the whole thing.

Payroll taxes, how do they work?
12-04-2011 , 08:24 PM
Im sure the Republicans are fighting to lower those job killing payroll taxes right now, so nothing to worry about soon.

Ah, yes. thank you. that would explain why 1/2 of the SE tax is deductable I guess also.

After getting the Association for Children's Chimneysweeps endorsement and ticking off the entire working poor demographic by calling them lazy, Dickensian arch-villain Newt Gingrich now claims people on food stamps are using the money to jet off to Hawaii.

The irony of using campaign funds to jet off to Hawaii is apparently lost on him.
