What are you proud of as an American? What are you proud of as an American?

One of my problems with American nationalism as that it's usually founded on what I think are pretty poor things: military conquests (lol we pwned Iraq), faux-political ideologies (lol we liberated Iraq), creating things we didn't create (lol we invented freedom). BUT, there are lots of things we have to be proud of as Americans. What are some of yours?

Sorry if this is a dumb post, I'm still figuring out this forum.

Mine:

Jazz
ee cummings
Hemingway

edit: if you're not an American, just say what your nationality is and something you're proud of as a Canadian or whatever

Democracy. No we didn't invent it, but it didn't stick until 1783. The American Revolution might have been the most important event of the Millennium and I think it brought about a change for the better.

Proud that we were, at one point, the closest approximation of a free society that has every existed in the modern world (on a large scale anyway).

The word is German, the food is American.

And FWIW of the three origin theories on the hamburger, one takes place in Hamburg, New York.

The constitutional republic - the greatest, but sadly failed, attempt to restrain the power hungry from the oppression of a populace.

"A republic, if you can keep it."

- 1980 US Hockey win over the SU

- We were the first real democracy. Sure there are freer societies nowadays but we got the ball rolling and were the shining beacon of freedom relative to the rest of the world for a long time.

- US military engineers and logistics. Our military has a stellar record in getting supplies where they are needed and building the things needed to support military operations. We supplied an entire major city under blockade for over a year. Eat that Stalin!

- Compared to the rest of the world we are insanely tolerant of immigrants and we have the most diverse country in the world.

That when traitorous, slave-owning southerners tried to rip the country apart we kicked the [censored] out of them, kept the country together, and freed the slaves

I don't think "kicked the [censored] out of them" means what you think it means, but everyone is entitled to their opinions I guess...

LOL ... yet if you speak or judge the current administration it's goons from the 4 companies that dominate the media in America attack you and somehow make you seem unamerican/unpatriotic. I find great irony that in countries that truly are free, they don't need to be constantly told "your free, your free, terrorists hate that we live in a free country, they hate us for our freedoms." Dixie Chicks, Ron Paul's foreign policy speeches are just a few to name. Why are they attacked by supposed "unbias" media outlets ? Why are all the candidates except Ron Paul members of Council on Foreign Relations? Why are the 4 that dominate the market members of the Council on Foreign Relations? (General Electric, Time Warner, News Corporation, Walt Disney).

I at this moment, love Canada and think it's the greatest country because we don't have a prison industrial complex nor a military industrial one. We have multiple different parties that run for parliament and we can have REAL change in what goes on in our country. At this moment I do NOT like the Conservaties who have 40% of the seats in our parliament but am comforted by the fact that the rest of the political parties have gone against Conservaties bills to pass such ridiculous laws like private prisons and WAR on drugs laws which are BEYOND ridiculous. If the War on Drugs is REALLY a war on drugs, where is cigarettes, alcohol and prescription drugs on that list ? At this moment I love Canada and I hope we don't adopt to the NAU and have US pressure on our great country.
