Is the US media honest? Is the US media honest?

03-03-2011 , 03:55 PM
In the United States if you watch news coverage on different networks you often get a completely different picture. Do you feel like your having ideas forced on you while watching certain programs? In this thread i encourage open and honest opinions about the lack of honesty in coverage of current events. How does corporate agendas influence media therefore influence the general public? Why is the general public so quick to repeat often times baseless "facts" they hear from their favorite personality, furthering the spread of bad information?

I posted it in a different thread, but in Canada, there are laws that state news programs can't knowingly lie. As such, Fox News and right wing radio have failed to get a foothold in the country.

This has way more to do with the news consumer being a headline-loving drooler than wtih TEH JUUUIIICCCEE or Rupert Murdoch controlling the news.

Its preety obvious to anybody that pays attention that the media manipulates the information. If you think it just boils down to the consumer preferences you havent studied the issue deeply enough.

Actually it's pretty obvious Americans have multiple options for where they get their news. They overwhelmingly choose to ingest the crap. Media outlets provide the product their consumers want.

So people are choosing dishonest media? Do you really think people are aware they are choosing crap?

Once upon a time, NEWS media was about more than simply giving "consumers" what they "want."

And once upon a time, it was considered improper for a woman to wear skirts that showed her knees in public.

You're not going to un-ring that bell either.

You think we can never go back to reporters doing investigations and are forever stuck with talking heads shouting lies at extreme volume?

I agree women should not be allowed to vote.

What do you guys think of Glenn Beck? Does he use borderline scare tactics on his show?
03-04-2011 , 02:18 AM
"More people named Jeremy own slingshots than ever before. More about this worrying trend at 11."

"Water can kill you, even in your sleep. Our scientists have the details."

Maybe it's honest, but it's still fear mongering bull ****.

I wouldn't use the term borderline. He makes money selling fear, fortunately his ratings are dropping. So hopefully even his viewers think he's dropped off the deep end.

From the anecdotal evidence I've gathered from conversations with family and acquaintances that get their news from the boob tube, I'd say the answer is definitely no. Phrases like "no spin zone" seem to work on these people.
