On the one hand McD does not define a culture, but as someone who has been travelling the world for a long time now, (lol olds), its obvious that omni-culture is spreading and cultural distinctiveness is on the wane.

Seems like an inevitable consequence of global communication.

I think the point Jalfrezzi is struggling to put across is, that we should be worried about the hegemonic content embedded in omni-culture.

jalfrezi has a very minor point, but he is making it in a very dumb, overly broad way.

What we are really talking about here is modernization. Any time a society modernizes, something is lost. To take a trivial example, virtually no one has handwriting as elegant as the handwriting of educated people in the 18th century.

You don't have to acknowledge that modernization is undesirable, or that it is a net negative, in order to acknowledge that modernization entails some loss of something.

On the flip side, the mere fact that there are downsides to modernization is of course a woefully incomplete argument against modernization.

But, Jalfrezi hates America. You'll never catch him complaining about people taking tea in Bermuda. Maybe in response to this post to try to prove otherwise, but no, not really.

He cites Grenada as a prime example of the great imperialist Satan's quest for world domination. (if you think it is, check out Thanksgiving in Grenada)

I was all "yeah whatever" assuming she was just talking it up, but when I got the cab, we passed through bits of the city that reminded me of a zombie movie. There were completely drug-****ed people lurching around the streets and lying on blankets and stuff. Maybe it wouldn't have been dangerous but I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to walk through it. As far as I could tell that was somewhere in downtown Miami.
Florida tho

That's what this thread is about.

Guess which other communist socialist ideal failed completely too -> Venezuela.

Time for America #1 to come in there and turn it into the fun playground it richly deserves to become.
Bingo. Some people get rustled when the discussion involves socialism or communism outside of Norway.

The whole you can walk at night in any American city apart from the bits you cant is also a really dumb argument.
