The spirit of reconciliation was understandable at the end of the war. In 2015, when we have the retrospect of Lincoln's assassination, the 12-year insurgency waged by white supremacists in the South, the disenfranchisement of freedmen by "Redeemer" governments, another 70 years of Jim Crow, lynchings, resistance to school integration and civil rights... I think we can dispense with the romanticism around the Confederacy and its successor terrorists.

What about the actual Confederate flags as opposed to the battle flag? Are they allowed on gravestones? And what about Nazi flags?

Looks like the SC House passed the bill and the flag and pole are coming down. I hope the removal of the flag isn't a big media/political photo op event. Have the regular maintenance guy pull it down like a dead tree.

Just get the black chick back and let her do it. Give her a zippo too.

I missed the word "national" in hornbug's post. The new ban will only apply to national cemeteries.

Mister Madame governor, tear down that flag

Ok, yeah, you're right, I'm a lot more careful about how I criticize mouthbreathing idiots in real life because they tend to carry weapons, be extremely insecure, and may be prone to violence when ther feelings get hurt and can't use their words to defend their views. So what? You think that is a point against us? It says more about you that you think verbal abuse should be greeted with physical violence.
Ya, "don't have the stones to say that irl" (because some(?) recipients of said words would physically attack or intimidate the speaker) isn't a strong point.

Republicans are having second thoughts.

Republicans to Vote on Allowing Display of Confederate Flag

Quote:
In a rapid and dramatic policy shift, Confederate flag imagery could be allowed to remain displayed on graves on federal land in some circumstances under a Republican-sponsored amendment that will be voted on in the House on Thursday.
Quote:
The Republican amendment would effectively undo two of Democratic amendments adopted on the floor Wednesday; no members spoke in opposition at the time. Those amendments would block funding from being used to decorate a grave in a federal cemetery with the flag and bar the National Park Service from using funds to contract with gift shops that sell merchandise with Confederate flag imagery.

10 minutes later, after realizing what he had done Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) grovels, "Leadership made me do it."

But a year later, a court order forced the release of the police report, which revealed how Calvert was clearly caught in the act and attempted to run from the police.
He's still alive?

If these idiots hadn't let the flag be displayed at official government locations all these years, no one would give a crap about a few cemeteries and random monuments.

they took it down. thats that.

lol hornbug, I read your link, this is not the sweeping policy change you portray it to be, turns out you couldn't really permanently display a traitorous flag on your gravestone in a national cemetery anyways.

Quote:
Rep. Jared Huffman's (D-Calif.) amendment to the 2016 Interior Department spending bill seeks to end a policy that allows a temporary display of the flag in cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. It sailed through on a voice vote after minimal discussion on the House floor that encountered no opposition.

The final vote on the Interior bill is expected on Thursday.
National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis issued a directive in 2010 that allows national cemeteries that commemorate a designated Confederate Memorial Day to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans with small Confederate flags. The directive states that decorative flags must be removed "as soon as possible" once the Confederate Memorial Day is over.
