I probably should mention I loved those two seasons of The Wire anyway.

It's not a conclusion. It's a proposition meant to evoke consideration of related phenomena from alternate points of view. Internet Argumentation 101.

There's no "anyway" when it comes to season 4, it was ****ing great.

That's a neat trick, I'm going to try it out. The next time my boss asks if I finished a project under budget, I'll just tell him to consider whether he has ever gone over budget on one of his own projects. That should satisfy him.

Go for it. Because we all know answering a direct question from your boss is analogous to an author writing an opinion piece to an implied audience.

Chomsky came to a conclusion in the article. But it wasn't what you pointed out. Here:

Quote:
It’s increasingly clear that the operation was a planned assassination, multiply violat[ed] elementary norms of international law. There appears to have been no attempt to apprehend the unarmed victim, as presumably could have been done by 80 commandos facing virtually no opposition—except, they claim, from his wife, who lunged towards them. In societies that profess some respect for law, suspects are apprehended and brought to fair trial.
The key points are bolded.

I didn't say it wasn't bloody great.

I said it took on a surreal quality.

Thoughts on Chomsky

Wait, he's still alive?

Yes, but he's had dementia for about 60 years now.

Chomsky elaborates, expands, "fill[s] in some of the gaps" on his original unedited version here:

Chomsky: "There is Much More to Say"
-The planned assassination of OBL as well as the invasion itself violated basic norms of international law

-The mission was to kill, not capture

-Law requires criminals to be captured rather than killed unless self-defense is necessary

-Dumping Bin Laden's body at sea violated Pakistan and International law which maintains an inquest be made upon violent death at the hands of government and provoked anger in the Muslim world

-In lawful societies, suspects are apprehended and tried, OBL was merely a suspect

-If the tables were turned and Iraqi commandos assassinated GW Bush and dumped his body at sea for 'deciding' to invade Iraq, reactions in the US would likely have been different

-Either the Nuremberg Tribunals are to be taken seriously, or the Iraq war of aggression--going far beyond OBL's alleged crime--was not supremely criminal

-Drone killings in Pakistan are bad

-Go USA

Well at least Noam is still a patriot
