Shock Study: Black Children Can't Swim Shock Study: Black Children Can't Swim

The minority swimming gap has deep roots in America's racial history. For decades during the 20th century, many pools were segregated, and relatively few were built to serve black communities.

John Cruzat, USA Swimming's diversity specialist, said these inequalities were compounded by a widespread misperception—fueled by flawed academic studies—that blacks' swimming ability was compromised by an innate deficit of buoyancy.

"There are people who still give credence to these stereotypes, even in the black and Hispanic community," said Cruzat, who wants to break the cycle that passes negative attitudes about swimming from one black generation to another.

"These long-held beliefs are still so potent," he said. "If you don't teach your children to swim, you're putting your grandchildren at risk."

Cruzat was pleased by one finding in the new study—that most black and Hispanic children do not disdain swimming as a "white sport." The study also found that swimming ability, regardless of race, increased in relation to parents' income and education.
Folks, I am not lying to you, I thought this was a headline from the Onion. We are really sinking....

As a former lifeguard, that was fun job, this study is hardly shocking. It's pretty well known and it caused by a lack of access to pools and lessons for monetary or geographical reasons.

Never heard that black people couldn't float as well however. lol

i have a couple black friends that i hang out with on a regular basis in the summer...none of them can swim.

i clown them unmercifully for it.

next conversation about it, when we're at our buddy's pool...'hey baugh, i heard that it's not your fault you can't swim, it's that black people don't float as good..read about it, it was a study'..

i seriously can't wait!

wiper, when I was in cleveland a ridiculous amount of black kids would drown every summer, something I never heard of back east.

More muscle. Less body fat. Less buoyancy. Duh.

I sink like a rock, fwiw.

Yes, that must be true. Because you're pretty sure of it.

The joke is, ( I said joke allright) is that black guys can't swim because their super big penises drag them down to the bottom of the pool so they can't swim.
05-02-2008 , 01:45 AM
I'm a pasty McWhitey white boy and I can't swim, if that makes anyone feel better.

I've never heard of black ppl being unfloatable. I think that's pretty effin funny. Must be becuz their lungs are all flooded with grape drink.

How does one get the job of "USA swimming diversity specialist," and how much does that pay? Sounds like a pretty sweet gig to go around giving interviews talking about stereotypes no one's ever heard of, for a living.

i always heard it was because blacks (and asians) have higher muscle density than whites, which puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to swimming ... this was in a report explaining the lack of minorities completing the Navy SEAL training program.

i just figured it was both that + not very many pools in poor neighborhoods + no money to spend on swim lessons.

FWIW I've heard this too and it seems plausible, white people generally come from colder climates than black people, in terms of ancestry.

Of course "innate lack of buoyancy" while accurate makes it sound both funny and kinda racist.

Yeah, but at least they didn't say that blacks weren't as buoyant as whites in the school system.

Now, here is a study that comes along that is clearly based in racial stereotypical thinking. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the swimming organization who published this is going out of its way to capitalize on the "swimming gap" to draw attention to itself. Why couldn't they say that poorer kids without access to pools couldn't swim? Why did it have be black kids from poorer areas without access to pools couldn't swim?

And here everyone is pretty much buying into the stereotypes and agreeing with the study and the fallacies behind it. It kills me.

I'm sure of it as well, but thats mostly because I'm right.

Quote:
Significant differences in obesity among race or ethnic groups remain. The prevalence of overweight in Mexican-American and non-Hispanic black girls was higher than among non-Hispanic white girls. Among boys, the prevalence of overweight was significantly higher among Mexican Americans than among either non-Hispanic black or white boys. Among adults, similar differences existed. Approximately 30% of non-Hispanic white adults were obese, and 45.0% of non-Hispanic black adults and 36.8% of Mexican American adults were obese.
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/06...esity03_04.htm

Although this is percent obese and not average fatness.

EDIT: If you go here: http://www.halls.md/chart/height-weight.htm
You can find the average weight charts for white and black males and females, and you can look at the 50th percentile curves for each. The male curves are pretty close to each other, but the female curves are SIGNFICANTLY higher for black women. So I'd say its safe to assume the average black person is fatter than the average white person. Again, limitations, this is weight not fat but its a reasonable proxy.

Not outraged at all, actually, just pointing out the double standards. That, and lack of critical thinking.

I guessed I'm confused.

Research indicates twice as many black kids can't swim compared to white kids.

Why is that?

Present hypothesis.

Compare to other kids and analyze variables to find reasoning.

Refute

Publish.

Newsrag pick up journal and writes piece entitled "Black Kids Cant Swim" and tries to summarize data while interviewing people to make it readable.

I think your sarcasm meter is off, for a number of the replies here.

Black people don't bother learning to swim because they're so fleet-footed that they can just run on water.
05-02-2008 , 03:10 PM
Oh, no, really.

I remember when our city pools were segregated. We had one black pool in the city. We would go by and look (from the car driving fast because we were taught to be afraid of black people) and the pool would be so full you couldn't see any water.

Maybe there wasn't much water and the black kids were just wading. Maybe thats why they never learned to swim, the damn city shorted the water in their pool.

Then they closed the pools because of insurance costs. So, I think we should blame the damn lawyers for black kids not being able to swim. They sued the black kids right out of the pool.
