Awesome segment from Thursday's Daily Show between Jon Stewar(d?)t and John Oliver:

JO: Think of 'empire' as a video game. Afghanistan is the final level. Sure, other players have made it this far, but no one has beaten it yet. And I don't know what it will take to finish this game, some sort of cheat code, maybe a magic amulet hidden behind one of their bricks, but you're so close!

JS: But even if we do win, as you yourself have said, what do we win? Nothing of value!

JO: Absolutely, no, you get nothing of value, except: your initials would reside as the high score on the big board of history!

Today on Face the Nation, I'm pretty sure I heard Michael Steele insinuate that Obama was racist for urging one of two African-American governors (David Patterson) not to run for re-election, while not making that request to Corzine.

The irony runs deep here.

That seems less ironic than just plain dumb.

The Bobblespeak translations of Meet the Press

Pretty funny.

edit: the first sentence is a link. Why doesn't it appear underline, as usual?

Obama: maybe you haven’t been paying attention but I gave the GOP everything they wanted!

Gregory: but you haven’t resigned!

Obama: um,, no

Gregory: or put hippies in internment camps where they belong!

Obama: give me another six months

I want to read a decent history of the Industrial Revolution that isn't "the rich get richer, the poor get poorer" lefty orthodox tripe. I read "Capitalism and the Historians" earlier this summer which was good, but was mainly based on historiography and economic misconceptions rather than actual history.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Ralph Raico media:

There's one actually about the Industrial Revolution itself ( link ), but he also has a whole lecture series. It's called History: The Struggle for Liberty.

Quote:
[..] He discusses the events, ideas, debates, and institutions that were crucial in the process of creating the "European miracle" of the most astonishing advance of civilization in history.

Throughout this 10-lecture course, Raico draws attention to literature, personalities, and events that made the difference. Most importantly, Raico discusses the origin and effects of what Ludwig von Mises called the "primordial thing: the idea of freedom from the state." The roots of this idea extend far back into the middle ages and the early centuries of Christianity. They came to fruition in the Industrial Revolution, which is vigorously defended, and were never more assaulted than in the French and Bolshevik Revolutions. The relationship between liberty and empire is also discussed, with special reference to the problem of American imperialism.

Moar great stuff about Charlie Rangel's ethical oversights From the AP:

Quote:
Rep. Charlie Rangel, the latest congressional titan with ethics problems, is described by a longtime House colleague as the guy who would make sure everyone put on oxygen masks during a flight emergency, but would have to be told to put on his own.

If Rep. Gary Ackerman's characterization fits the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, then Rangel's inattention to his ethical conduct has reached epic proportions.

The person most in charge of writing the nation's tax laws neglected to pay taxes on rental income from his vacation villa in the Dominican Republic. He failed to report assets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on his annual disclosure forms, including a hard-to-miss credit union account worth up to $500,000. And those are only some of his lapses.
Quote:
Other questions involve Rangel's acceptance and use of rent-stabilized apartments in New York from a Manhattan developer, and whether he received a sweetheart deal to finance his ownership interest in the Dominican resort.

The committee has yet to add to the list the financial disclosure omissions, but is likely to do so.

Stanley Brand, a former House counsel who has represented numerous politicians with ethics troubles, said "old school" lawmakers such as Rangel often think they don't have to stay current with tightened ethics rules.

"As they rise in seniority ... they think less about changes occurring under their nose," Brand said. "Over time it becomes less important to them. They pay less attention to it even though they probably should, while the ethics manual gets thicker."

Pretty lol bit from the epic New Yorker article on the week surrounding the Lehman failure (behind a firewall, so can't link):

Quote:
At 11 A.M., for the fourth consecutive day, investment bankers filed into the New York Fed. "I don't think I can take another day of this," a Goldman banker told Lloyd Blankfein as they got out of the Goldman car.

"You're getting out of a Mercedes to go to the New York Federal Reserve," Blankfein responded. "You're not getting out of a Higgins boat on Omaha Beach."

Yes imo.

Jan Helfeld regularly states that you cannot delegate a right that you do not have. But he's also a minarchist. Can someone explain to me how the former doesn't automatically lead to AC?
