Rand Paul for Senate 2010 Rand Paul for Senate 2010

A country run by Randites would be a hell of a lot better than what we've got right now.

I have started to notice that too. Christine O just seemed like Bush II to me. The only difference is they seem to want to ban abortion even if the rapist murders the husband and tortures the other kids. And they want to balance the budget by cutting taxes and increasing defense spending and medicare payments.

In the last Rand Paul debate, I thought the democrat actually seemed the stronger candidate.

This story makes me regret that I haven't been paying much attention to this race.

Whatever was left of the gloves in the heated Kentucky Senate race came off tonight. In a televised debate from the University of Louisville, Republican nominee Rand Paul lashed out at his Democratic opponent, Jack Conway -- even refusing to shake his hand at the end of the debate -- saying to Conway at one point "you demean the state of Kentucky."

For his part, Conway was not afraid to climb down into the muck and take Paul on. He accused Paul of "joining a group known for mocking Christianity" while the Republican was a student at Baylor University and called on Paul to explain why he once "tied a woman up and asked her to worship a false idol."
Quote:
Several profiles have referred to Paul's membership in an irreverent student society known as the NoZe Brotherhood that was banned from Baylor for, according to school officials, mocking Christianity, a no-no at the Baptist university. A GQ profile last summer exposed some of Paul's shenanigans with the group, including one occasion where he and a friend allegedly led a female student to a creek, tied her up and requested she worship "Aqua Buddha."

Paul claimed the stories were not worthy of voter attention. Run on the issues of the day," he told Conway. "Don't make up stuff about me from college that you think you've read on the Internet blogs. Grow up."

"it wasn't from the Internet blogs," Conway shot back. "It was on CBS News, it's been in Politico, the Lexington Herald-Leader."

"You know how we know when you're lying?" Paul said to Conway. "Your lips are moving. You're accusing me of crimes. Do you know nothing about the process? You're going to stand there and accuse me of a crime from 30 years ago from some anonymous source? How ridiculous are you? You embarrass this race."
The race card makes an unexpected appearance.

Has Rand Paul now formally taken the steps to remove any religious overtones from his political career? If his personal faith is important, can he refrain from any attacks on other faiths? Will he condemn any of his Tea Party colleagues if/when they attack Islam?

I CANNOT believe Jack Conway put HIS NAME on that ad. I just cannot believe it.

That would be an uber-ridiculous ad even by the standards of an outside group that Conway would then be able to publicly distance himself from. But for him to put HIS NAME on that, WOW.

Seriously though, I am hoping that Jack Conway has sparked a promising trend of political candidates centering campaigns around hearsay about crazy stuff their opponent may have done in college. Why stop at 30-second ads? I want full-length feature films. Pass the popcorn, please!

Jesse Eisenberg is the obvious choice to play Rand Paul of 30 years ago. Not sure who plays Aqua Buddha.

Well TomVeil just disqualified himself from ever running for political office.

I hope TomVeil isn't your real name!

I've spent my whole life disqualifying myself for political office.

I think it's an interesting question whether the ad was bad politics (setting aside the question whether it was in bad taste, unfair or otherwise despicable). Certainly, the conventional wisdom is that Conway has hurt himself.

But I think this depends upon some unknowns: (1) how close is the race really at the moment; (2) how many true undecided votes and "soft" votes are there now; (3) of those votes that are up for grab, how will that particular group react.

If Conway is clearly behind, then he has little to lose with this kind of gambit.
