it's incredible how these people continue to tell on themselves, over and over again

It's not really that incredible. Just boring and sad.

All she does is genius; obvious missteps wholly dismissed or ignored.

The issue people have with her affected accent imitative of the crowd she's speaking to is that it's stereotypical political phoniness. When Hillary did that she was deservedly made fun of for two-faced pandering. Authenticity and consistency—hallmarks of trustworthiness—are virtues. Bernie, despite his flaws, is authentic. He doesn't feel the need to talk like a baptist preacher when talking to a black crowd.

You guys in this thread praising what she did, and going as far as to call people racist for accurately pointing out her phony pandering, is pathetic. It's not enough to say that she was playing to the crowd, and yeah, you can see how it came off as a little phony to people. You have to deify her as an underprivileged heroine who has spent her life needing to shape-shift to get by, and people who don't change their voice depending on who they're talking to are bigots from a "tiny, insulated community." It's revolting. When I was in my teens I used to change my accent when I was going from trying to act hard, to being in a classroom, to pretending I was Russian to look cool at some party. It's embarrassing. And I don't do that anymore because I'm not phony and insecure.
It's "so mi go so then"

I don't think anyone is saying she's a phony because she speaks differently at home or with friends than she does during a congressional hearing. People are saying she's phony because she's affecting a southern black accent. She doesn't talk like that in the Bronx; it's just a ploy (subconscious or deliberate) to ingratiate herself with the audience. I understand the argument that changing your diction is more common for minorities, but I don't buy that it excuses her pretending she's a Southern Baptist preacher when facing a crowd like that.

And I'm not looking to crucify her for it. It would just be nice to see something besides rabid partisanship by the AOC henchman in this thread. If she had said, "Yeah, I noticed I was absorbing a bit of an accent up on stage. Got a little carried away in the passion of the room!" Fine, totally forgivable. But of course she has to spin it that people pointing out her fake voice are racists who don't understand her heroic journey. And then this thread exalts her for it.

Why would someone from the Bronx fake a southern accent when talking to black people who are from the Bronx?

Yeah im confused.

It does remind of when i was a kid and we used to go back to Yonkers to visit my moms family and her accent would come out pretty strong. Downstate people talk funny.

somigo,

Video is probably slowed down. Find it on youtube and play it at 1.25 speed and it's much less pronounced. And as people have alluded to, it's social mirroring. I don't think it's pandering. But yeah, that's a judgment call. I think she's a decent person and isn't mocking anyone. I think Trump is an ahole and when he says "Puerto Rico" he's mocking people. Trumpkins may think it's the other way around, if so they're wrong imo.

does anyone else hear a black accent? what is a black accent anyway?
04-06-2019 , 05:43 PM
Code-switching is very common for people who are multilingual and multicultural. The assumption that the way she speaks to congress is the “normal” way and the way you see her on this video is disingenuous is telling. The idea that having different ways of speaking in different situations is pure choice can only come from a place of privilege when your default is the “normal” way.
04-06-2019 , 05:53 PM
It's not that pronounced I don't think, but I definitely "code-switch" a bit between people I know from college or computer programming and people I know from construction. It's off to go too far, but it's also off to not do it at all. Maybe AOC, maybe politicians in general, are the kind of people who take it a little too far, the kind of people who spend 3 months in London and come back with an accent.
04-06-2019 , 05:54 PM
I code-switch to dumb things down when I post on 2p2
04-06-2019 , 05:55 PM
Thank you.
04-06-2019 , 06:05 PM
Everyone does it to a degree, of course. I don't write emails that need a profanity filter in my professional environment like what I write here, but that is different than what people from some cultures are tasked when entering the American professional environment which is CLEARLY structured on white culture.

Some aspects of code-switching are very specific, like switching literal languages, and some of it is switching things as subtle as type of humor as that is also culturally specific. For kids who are first generation straddling the American world and their parent's world is something that they know their entire lives. The point is, it is pretty natural and necessary for AOC to have done it her entire life. The LULS about how genuine it is are ignorant of that context. Part of this is because people think of her in the context they see in most and she is so successful at code-switching for THEM.

Kinda a tell here that you think an "aint" and a couple upturned likes make someone pretending to be a southern baptist teacher. As a person of color from a diverse neighbourhood she is going to have extensive exposure to black people speaking who aren't southern baptist preachers.

Again, it is FAR more common for minorities to adopt substantially different diction as part of their normal lives. It isn't shocking that as a POC she did this. This issue seems to entirely be white people - who have the privilege of never having to do this to get a job etc - being outraged that a POC would ever dare give a slight change to their diction when empathizing with a friendly audience from their diverse home.

It's absolutely not, these racists are so stupid and confused they don't understand what "codeswitching" is(it's not bad? It's not racist?) but also they didn't even accurately label it.

They get yelled at when they do a "Me so horny" voice at the Chinese delivery guy but are unable to discern what principle could possibly have lead to that, so their best guess is "not speaking the Queen's English at all times is racist"? LOL
04-06-2019 , 06:43 PM
The writing style is "dumb and uneducated, trying to sound smart." Which is absolutely perfect given the content.

It's similar to the way she and other Spanish speakers have been attacked for disingenuously correctly pronouncing their own ****ing names instead of with a butchering American accent.

But they got her this time, I guess.

Roy Williams all of a sudden found his Southern accent when he went from KU to UNC. Racist.
