They're running to the right of our centrist party for the most part. Yes, I realize you are trolling.

The right in Canada is gutting environmental legislation and social services, reducing police accountability, rolling back sex education legislation so it doesn't teach LGBT content, pushing more restrictive immigration policies, and is being warmly embraced by Nazis, etc. It's nothing like the centrist Dems and very much like Trump, with the largest province recently having elected our own Trump as premier.

Echoing the excellent replies above, I will simply point out the following:

(1) Trump is so [fill in the blank] that now may be the best time to advocate "progressive" policies

(2) Leaders lead -- it is a crappy leader who takes an opinion poll before forming their own views and policies. Every significant advance in ANYTHING has been brought about by strong leaders pushing/pulling America towards that change (the list is endless but includes the end of slavery, women's suffrage, 40-hour work week, Civil Rights Acts, LGBTQ rights, etc.).

(3) Inertia is difficult to overcome. People are wedded to the past and the current status quo. So it often takes a paradigm shift (not simply incremental change) to engender real advances in policy and practice. The climate change "debate" is an obvious example but there are many others.

For greater clarity, the current Federal government here is the liberal party, not the conservative party. There is a federal election this fall, but if anything things are likely to become more conservative, not less.

You don’t need to live like a pauper to help people in poverty.

She’s behaving like most young people that just got their first high paying job and buying into some upper middle class luxuries.

There is nothing wrong with that at all.

Suggestion: Try to swallow your rage deep down when one of those pesky browns escapes the ghetto.

The common man's president goes to Florida every other week at a cost to the public of millions of dollars so he can **** on a gold-plated toilet but a member of Congress paying higher than average rent is all that's needed for the Washington Examiner (lol) to generate rw outrage. We're sitting on the short end of the seesaw here.

OMG she's living in an APARTMENT COMPLEX that has two pools! I hear Charles Koch's apartment complex only has one pool.

Man, what a joke that article is.

It's not even that. She's living in Navy Yard because it adjoins Capitol Hill. While being all pompous about the fact that they're not identifying the building, you know, because that would be unethical, the Examiner in fact provided easily enough information to identify it. I won't name it, but it's a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Capitol building.

Quote:
Apartments in the building currently start at $1,840 per month... the average rent in Washington D.C. is $1,340 for a one-bedroom apartment
That doesn't seem that unreasonable given its location. As for the "luxuries", like:

Quote:
These include: two private massage rooms with state-of-the-art hydrotherapy beds; men’s and women’s saunas; a full-scale demonstration kitchen with wood-fired pizza oven; a 25-meter indoor lap pool; a rooftop infinity pool with panoramic views of the Capitol; a Peloton cycling studio with over a dozen bikes; and a fireside lounge featuring a Steinway & Sons player piano.

Also included is a PGA-grade golf simulation lounge with a wrap-around screen and viewing bar that allows residents to play virtually at dozens of the world’s most exclusive golf courses with the touch of a button.
OVER A DOZEN BIKES?!

Like, those are mostly pretty normal for big new apartment complexes. Massage rooms are... rooms. Saunas are slightly modified rooms. I have no idea what a "full-scale demonstration kitchen with wood-fired pizza oven" is, but it sounds like a room with a pizza oven in it. The PGA golf simulation thing is a little unusual, but I could probably get all the other stuff in an apartment here in Adelaide which would not be considered luxury.

So yeah, it's not even that she's indulging a little, she's made a completely normal living decision.

idk, how can AOC really claim to speak for the people if she doesn't locate herself an hour's metro ride outside of DC?
02-25-2019 , 04:03 AM
It would be stupid and dangerous for her to live in an unsecured building. The building referenced is pretty much average for the area, not counting the housing projects that are just a few blocks away. Her other viable options are basically:

Georgetown: where a lot of the actually rich Congressmen live and rents are even higher.
Alexandria, VA: adds a lot to commute and doesn't save much in rent. Neighborhood more for families.
Some bargain rentals that aren't secured and risk her life to make a point.

Her living arrangements are perfectly normal for someone in her position. (single with her first high paying job)

And beyond that, someone currently being targeted for stalking by several media organizations and for assassination by wacko right-wingers

AOC: I want everyone to have a good job and a decent place to live.

Deplorable: You have a good job and a decent place to live you hypocrite!
