The "Black" National Anthem The "Black" National Anthem

07-02-2008 , 12:13 PM
"She says she wanted to express her love of her country by mixing the lyrics of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" with the melody of the "Star-Spangled Banner."

"When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: 'I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,'" said Marie.

Hickenlooper's staff picked Marie to sing the national anthem. The mayor says he believes Marie did not intend to offend anyone or make a political statement."

Would the fallout be any different, or would we have a different opinion from the mayor if we changed the word black to white in the story, or somebody sang the "white" national anthem? What does this kind of debate mean for america's psyche? is there any honesty when it comes to racial equivalence?

Let's have a mature debate about what this all means.
That presupposes it has a meaning other than as a launching point for another name-calling debate about race in America.

I find it odd that some black people demand to be embraced and accepted in mainstream America while simultaneously demeaning and rejecting mainstream America.

Oh please. You act as though this is some profound statement. Any minority viewpoint (not just racial) that wants to be respected is in the same "odd" situation "they demand to be embraced, but don't accept mainstream thought."

I find it odd that Libertarians want to be accepted as mainstream, but reject mainstream thought.

I find it odd that goth people want to be accepted, but reject mainstream norms...

The left, throught literally dozens of concessions, is quite content to accept and acknowledge the inferiority of blacks in America. How else could one explain all the asymmetries? Most blacks accept the concessions as victims, not inferiors, but the difference is an illusion. Black acceptance of these concessions assuages leftist white guilt, furthering the cycle.

Electing Obama will not fix anything.

I always thought Goth people were going the extra mile to NOT be accepted.

surely electing a black man to the most powerful office in the world is symbolic of the changing status of (as RP would say) "the" blacks in america? It is hard to make arguments of inferiority when a black man is in the oval office.

It's the American National Anthem

Not the White
Not the black
Not the latino
Not the Asian

This is not a racial issue it's a national one.

PPl have done it in the past to scorn
What has changed ?

There are a billion songs out there to change. Leave the national anthem alone

JUST LEAVE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM LONE

Translation of ITD's not so subtle racism: Blacks are inferior.

You, sir, are a nasty bigot.

The theory of comparative advantage, I think, invalidates any concept of plain-old inferiority.

Even if some group has an absolute advantage at a task, it is better to specialize the skills that require the most technical expertise.

Genetic fitness, the concept that organisms gradually out-compete and adapt to their specific environment, would seem to invalidate the concept of plain old "inferiority".

Criticize ITD for insinuating that it's "inferiority" at a particular skill(s).

You based your conclusion on part of a sentence when the whole sentence does not support your conclusion.
I have not seen/heard a poorer use of inference in weeks.

Lets just send all those white people back to Europe. Then our race problem will be solved.

I can't make a judgment until I know if she was wearing a flag pin.

Remember when Rosie O'Donnell grabbed her crotch and spit after singing the Nat'l Anthem?

Why do white people hate this country so much?
