The WH report said ~10-50% of ALL jobs and that the concern was that even though up until now we have created new jobs that outnumber those lost that it might not be like that in the future. Take self-driving trucks as an example. Sure you will now have jobs where someone operates a fleet of these trucks but what do the 5/10 that aren't needed anymore do? The fact that truckers don't need to stop in tiny "cities" that depend on passerby means potential job loss there too. What do those people do? I get your point that new jobs come about and have the potential to replace old as that has been the case so far but from examples I have read it appears that isn't necessarily always going to be the case.

Like does anyone actually think that the people benefit from hearing whatever bull**** the White House has to offer? No actual journalism has ever emerged from a White House press briefing FFS.

It was at a White House briefing that Press Secretary Ron Ziegler on April 17, 1973 was forced to backtrack on months of Watergate evasions and declare his previous statements “inoperative.” It was at White House briefings that press secretaries for George W. Bush had to try to explain why no weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq. And it was at White House briefings that Jay Carney was forced to explain the problems with the healthcare.gov website.

Don't they have to invite him? Inviting Alec Baldwin as Trump instead would be much better imo...

i'm imagining a dark timeline where the only white house correspondents left are glowingly in praise of trump all the time. and the roast isn't directed at the president but instead at the fake media and the president's political rivals.

Excluding CNN, BBC, LAT, NYT, etc., is obviously outrageous, but LOL at anyone in the Trump administration who thinks it will be effective in disciplining those news organizations to be more favorable to Trump.

If the dinner happens, this is overwhelmingly likely to be the case.

CNN, BBC, and Buzzfeed BLOWN OUT

lol this is awesome

I think there is a legit movement for actual news outlets to skip the WHC dinner. Seems right to me.

Calling out the racism and xenophobia of this administration may be a moral imperative, and worth doing for that reason alone, but I no longer see the political utility.

Those who are willing to contemplate the idea that they may be racists are mostly straight up white supremacists on one end of the spectrum, and on the other end of the spectrum, lefty academic types who think that everyone white who freely participates and benefits from the current system is a racist. The 95% of people in the middle are goddamned convinced that they are not racists, and no amount of argument or information will convince them otherwise. They don't even think about whether policies are racist or xenophobic. Rather, they start from the unshakeable premise that they are not racists, and then define whether policies are racist or xenophobic according to whether they support those policies. If a policy that they support (e.g., travel ban) is described as racist, well, obviously that criticism is invalid because they support the ban and they know that they aren't racist.

One of this country's most serious race problems is its inability to have rational discussions about race. I don't know who is most to blame for that problem, or how to solve it.

Honestly, I think it's just Trump's surrogates going along for the ride. They all may be vile; but deep down they are all capitalists at heart. They know there's a sweet TV/Book/Media deal when the **** finally hits the fan. It's not like Spice Boy is breaking any laws by saying CNN isn't welcome. He's just doing what his boss tells him to do.

Yes, integrity abound right there.

So yeah maybe you're right? What did you want me to say to that "Could be RV, could be" kool

Because his "fake news media" that he is discussion IS the media...its cnn, abc, cbs, etc

It's not dishonest to characterize his statement as attacking the media because anyone who criticizes him is labeled "fake news" and thus "an enemy of the people"
