As a parent of a young child, mixed race no less, this **** fills me with sadness that quickly turns to very real rage and anger. I cant believe that I live in a country that would do this and that so many its citizens are so far removed from what is going on.

Think back to when you were a child. If you grew up poor, wealthy, or middle class the only thing that really mattered was that you had your parent(s). No go to a foreign country where you don't know any one or even understand the language and have your parents ripped away from you. That kind of thing can scar you for life and is just plane ****ing mean. And we are doing it because one party thinks maybe they can gain politically.

I agree that the average (hell, the above average) American is a historical illiterate, but I think high school history has been that way forever. In 71-3, every year it was the same thing. Start out in 1776 or so, wander thru the 1800's falling more and more behind the syllabus, and try to cover 6 weeks worth of material in 4 days at the end. We usually crapped out around the Great Depression.....let's just say the teachers were consistent.

Yeah, I took AP US History in 1983-84 and I don't really remember covering World War II let alone Vietnam.

We got as far as the civil rights era when I took US History in school, but the content was a total joke. I've learned more about the real history of the US from DVaut1 posts than I did in school.
