IME this is a relatively recent phenomenon that at least has grown tremendously during my lifetime. When I was a kid (1970s) it was liberals who were far more supportive of Israel. The evolution of the religious right, the evolution of the right wing in Israel, and the evolution of the war on Islam have all played a part in this.
And the last US President to take part in Israel actually making peace with its neighbors and giving up a lot of land in the process was an Evangelical Christian - Jimmy Carter. (could make an argument for Clinton under Oslo there, but many people wouldn't consider the semi-autonomy in the WB to have been giving up land.)
