I've wondered before about this claim that Iran is one of the biggest state sponsors of terrorism. It's a claim I've seen made frequently before, invariably, as here, without any evidence attached. I assume, like microbet said, that they're talking about Hezbollah and Hamas. The vast majority of what most Westerners would think about as "terrorism", i.e. attacks in Western countries, is carried out by Sunnis. Iran is Shia.
The lumping together of completely different phenomena as "terrorism" precludes discussion of which of these phenomena the US should care about.
Edit: I would also not be surprised if a blind eye is turned to the terrorism-sponsoring activities of US allies like the Saudis. IOW, this "biggest state sponsor of terrorism" is pretty transparently related to US strategic aims in the Middle East as opposed to what most people would think of as terrorism.
