how would it be illegal? They would just be changing tax laws. There is always risk that what is promised can disappear or be reversed by the government at a later date.

Sounds like they would be changing the terms of a contract once it's been signed.

yea, but when you contribute to traditional you can't deduct the contributions for tax purposes. So you can grow asset tax free in the interim, but you get taxed on both ends unless you rollover to a roth.

if you're covered by a work plan (like a 401k) then you can't deduct your contributions past certain income levels. You can still contribute, but you don't get the up front tax benefit.
