Your cliffs are correct. Your friend is probably wrong, but there's a chance he's using some wonky measurement that leaves him technically correct. Chemistry isn't always easy. If you take a liter of pure water and a liter of pure ethanol and pour them together into a bucket, the final volume will be a little bit less than two liters. That's why there are multiple ways of measuring things, because you might care about different things depending on your purpose.

I haven't read the article, but I didn't need to. Getting DNA from 6-8 skin cells is pretty routine. 99% of my work is in vitro, but I have done some nucleic extraction from cells. It's not hard. For 6-8 cells, you just do a DNA extraction followed by a bunch of PCR to amplify it.

And hell, here's something that might blow your mind. They could possibly tell whether or not Trayvon touched the gun based on bacteria. Martin and Zimmerman likely had different bacterial populations on their hands. If the investigation were careful, they could have taken a swab from Trayvon's fingertips and from George's and from the gun, and then run a screen for, say, bacterial ribosomal RNA or ribosomal DNA. The differences in bacterial species between their two fingers could potentially be resolved and implicate Trayvon touching the gun.
