Obamacare and poker Obamacare and poker

03-21-2010 , 02:05 PM
Ive been playing poker for the last 3-4 years as a job making between 40k and 60k a year.

Health insurance for me would be $700 a month in my area, and I have not had it in about 5 years.

What will obamacare do for me.

Oops, I trolled it up and now I'm banned. Again.

Force you to buy health insurance for probably 300-400 bucks a month or pay a penalty of like 2000 dollars I believe. You'd be better off just paying the penalty if you don't go to the doctor much because if you ever get sick you can just buy insurance and no one can turn you down.

Hard to answer without more details, like how old you are, marital status, part of the country, etc. Here's a calculator where you can plug in your specifics to find out what you can expect to pay for insurance and how much (if any) subsidy you will receive.

Well that was my understanding of the plan. What is incorrect about it?

Well, for instance, for a 25 year old, the expected premium will be about $200 a month, and waiting until you get seriously sick to sign up means any minor amounts you have paid beforehand do not count towards your deductible or out of pocket limits (not to mention that preventative care which is covered at 100%.)

Seems unlikely that he's 25 if he'd have to pay 700 bucks a month for health insurance currently.

WTF kind of coverage does 700/mo get you? Just looking quickly at random quotes I could get an HMO with dental rider for ~140/month. 26 and in Vegas fwiw.

It buys coverage for 50 year olds.

So dependent on so many questions. I know my sister started at 200 a month (23, still in college, Kansas) and just jumped to 260 after getting it just 2 months ago. That said, 700 bones is a lot of a single person.

$700 a month? WTF, I can get full coverage with a low deducatable from BCBS for like $200. Are you a crack addict or something?

I live in NY, not in the city,

29 non smoker, in very good health as well.

Wow really? That's pretty surprising.

Why do we have yet another thread on health care?

I'm worried that DE will have a breakdown, trying to rebut misunderstandings over countless threads, and that he will do so before insurance companies are forced to cover such a pre-existing condition.

Sorry, I'm too busy stocking my bomb shelter with water, food, guns and ammo against the tyranny that certain people assure me is coming after the vote today to keep merging threads.

New York will be one of the states where premiums come down the most due to the adverse selection problems they've had with community rating. Use the high cost area selection when using the calculator and it should give you a decent result.

No he understands.

Girls cost more at this age because they can have babies, and babies are expensive.

You will have less people with disposable income to play against.

I pay 55£/month in UK with a major insurer, covers everything including dental. This includes treatment in private facilities, private hospital rooms with TV/choice of food, etc etc. No deductible.
