If Gingrich was serious about slander lawsuits against SNL, he lost the respect I had for his intelligence. Between these types of comments, McCain-Feingold and other restrictions on free speech, Democratic Senator Jeff Binghaman wanting to bring back the Fairness Doctrine because he doesn't think talk radio is intelligent enough...well, it's a sad time for those who favor free speech.

Chuck Todd is hosting an hour on MSNBC right now and is proving to be a really, really good interviewer. He headed an actual honest discussion on voter registration problems followed by another on polling methodology. Is it too much to hope that he gets his own show?

Every Republican I know is showing up at 6AM on election day. The problem is I live in New York where there are 97 of us...

FWIW, I don't think Gingrich is serious -- no one is going to file suit against SNL -- but a big to-do was made on this forum about just threatening or suggesting legal action as a means of intimidation and how its a threat to democracy.

Why would he say something on television that he's not serious about?

Just enjoying how your typo was both a real word and one that had a completely different meaning than intended, but still made an accurate statement. Carry on.

I just read the transcript. Maybe it's possible Gingrich was being facetious. I have a hard time believing he actually thinks such a suit is anything but idiotic. Gingrich has a long reputation for making stupid statements, despite his high intelligence and academic pedigree. I am hoping it was just a throw away line meant in jest.

National Journal polls:

Quote:
Minnesota: Obama 50%, McCain 40%

Pennsylvania: Obama 51%, McCain 41%

Wisconsin: Obama 53%, McCain 40%
SUSA, PA

Obama 53
McCain 41

Have you guys been sent an email with a link to this video yet?

It's fairly clever; the premise is that you are the single voter that costs Obama the election. But the clever part is that it will insert your friend's name (or the name of whoever you choose) throughout, and all over the "CNNBC" page that hosts the video (wait for the end and it will show you how).

In this case, the video uses Michael Goldfarb of the Weekly Standard. Maybe I have super slow pony friends, but I just got it today...

The point here is that no one is making SNL skits wouldn't be held up in any American court as libel or slander, but Gingrich seems to be making a systematic effort to take down free speech for purely political reasons. Notice how none of the stories are actual legal action, but merely threats designed to intimidate? Isn't obvious to you why?

The point isn't to win a possible lawsuit, because they have zero chance of doing so. The point is to intimidate people by threatening huge legal fees. This is completely inappropriate from the man who may run in 2012 to be the front line of protecting our constitutional liberties.

Doesn't it bother some of you, that Gingrich is pressuring and harassing people from Radio stations to now TV stations?

The reason why we have such a high standard for things like libel and treason in America is to protect political dissidents, which is essential to have a productive democracy imo. Lowering these standards because it is politically convenient to you in the short term sets dangerous precedents for you if you don't support the majority in the future.

Now it is one thing to fight smears and protect yourself from the lies of others but I don't think this falls under those categories.
Not to mention that there is pretty much zero chance that a Gingrich legal team could write a complaint that would pass Rule 11 muster. The real legal fees and sanctions would be borne by him when defending the inevitable Rule 11 charge.

Seriously, this is SNL -- you don't think a first year associate could write a brief to get that complaint dismissed in about a day or two? It wouldn't even be costly to fight.

The GOP - who continue to argue that the Bill of Rights only has three or four amendments. Now that is Un-american.

I think it's more fun if you say:

"This poll is Good News... for JOHN MCCAIN!!!"

There is only one accepted way to settle these things, and that way is pony races. Don't try to change the rules just because your pony is too slow.

Pretty funny Larry David article about the election.

Among other things, he says:

Quote:
I can't take much more of this. Two weeks to go, and I'm at the end of my rope. I can't work. I can eat, but mostly standing up. I'm anxious all the time and taking it out on my ex-wife, which, ironically, I'm finding enjoyable.
Quote:
Five times a day I'll still say to someone, "I don't know what I'm going to do if McCain wins." Of course, the reality is I'm probably not going to do anything. What can I do? I'm not going to kill myself. If I didn't kill myself when I became impotent for two months in 1979, I'm certainly not going to do it if McCain and Palin are elected, even if it's by nefarious means.

15% of the total registered voters have already cast ballots, 36% of them black, and that sample is probably 2:1 Obama. Obama is on the air nationally and will air GA-specific ads; McCain will not spend a minute or a penny there. The state is going to wind up 60/40 with a third of the vote in, so the other two thirds are going to have to be awfully white and awfully GOP. I don't think the state will go blue, but I do think Intrade will have spiked when the state is still too close to call at 70%.

Wynton,

Your pony lost that race, too.

Damn it! I have an excuse: I was in a prison the last couple of hours, visiting a client (which I gratuitously point out in the hope that someone will use it as a straight line).
