People who think Trump or the birthers are racist because of their interest in the birther issue do not understand what real racism is.

Birthers are just conspiracy theory nuts, nothing more nothing less. It cheapens the existance of real racism in the world to suggest that pushing nutty conspiracy theories is racism.
05-01-2011 , 03:21 PM
It's a conspiracy theory based on racism.

Sure. A few percent might be non-racist prisonplanet type people. That doesn't make the issue less racist.
05-01-2011 , 03:25 PM
Tonight on law and Order: The detectives suspect a murderer might be a racist.
05-01-2011 , 03:37 PM
Racist, conspiracy theorist, or just a sufferer of TBI?

Boa: When you're at that point, it's best to find a new issue, since your posts about "cheapen[ing] the existance [sic] of real racism in the world" directly following posts about why you think Obama is making racist statements...
05-01-2011 , 04:21 PM
Racism is about the belief that racial groups possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race.

Does anyone believe that being able to be born within the borders of this country is one such characteristic? Of course not.

On the other hand, beliefs about being clingly to religion and being bitter could be a belief about people's mental characteristics and predispositions based on race.

I hope you can see the difference.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The bigger issue appears to be a coordinated effort of Obama supporters to accuse anyone who disagrees with Obama of having racist motives. If you can convince people of that and get them to vote on that, then they will not be voting on how well Obama is doing on tackling the economy and conducting foreign policy. And they don't want people to vote on those things again (see 2010 election).

Might wanna give it a listen..... or read.

You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

The bolded part is liberal code words for "white peoples"

Pointing out that people have those mindsets makes him racist how?
05-01-2011 , 05:12 PM
Err, no. I must have missed the "calling people anti immigrant is code word for white" seminar at our annual BBQ and virgin sacrifice gathering.

I didn't say he was racist..... I pointed out to phil that there was a racial element to the comment.

Whether Obama's "clinging to guns and religion" comment is racist or not (it's not) is a sideshow.

But I think there are alot of people who would agree to that sentiment about themselves. The tea party IS bitter, they do cling to there guns and they do not want people from other countries coming into the US in the manner that they have been. None of that is disputed or insulting.

Agreed, as I said, I'm only pointing out that there was a racial element to the comment. When he says "You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest,"..... he is obviously talking about white people as they are the vast majority of the populace in those small towns.

That is fair. It was also an off the cuff remark that Obama later regretted, partially because it has these racial undertones. That is a far cry from any of the birther stuff or continued racism from some elements of the tea party.

I would just like to throw out a serious note...

All serious political conversations need to address class, sex, race, and related issues. They don't need to degenerate into a side discussion, that's not what I am blogging here. What I am saying is that we all have blind spots in these areas. We should, if we are going to be serious, do a "head check" and make sure we aren't running our own point off the road.

Here on this BBS, there seems to be a vocal minority who wants this "head check" to be a ban-able offense by itself. And if that is what our generous hosts here at 2+2 want, I am 100% behind it. But I really don't think they do...

I think, and this is just little dead MissileDog's opinion, that complaining about "race baiting", without very good and well documented evidence, should be a ban-able offense.

Somehow MissileDog misspelling his own name in bold makes the times he does it to other people more acceptable.
