But it is an efficient weed-out tool. Math is fairly unique in that there are right and wrong answers and it's easy to see who is right and wrong. And if you cannot learn how to apply critical thinking towards math, you probably won't be good at it in other areas as well.

That's the biggest advantage for using harder math as a prerequisite. I don't use hard math in anything at my job. But I wouldn't trust someone to do my job who couldn't get a good grade at Calc II.
