None of those necessarily mean something is meritocracy though. In any case the implication of a 'meritocracy' is that there is some level playing field from which the stars are plucked by virtue of their merit, but you can have people compete against each other AND have the best person win by whatever rules are being played AND still not achieve an equality of opportunity that a meritocracy is supposed to approximate.

These companies are printing money hand over fist and have a hell of a lot more pressure to hire the best person for the job than Bob's used car lot. I believe that Apple/Google/Facebook do their best (far more than most companies) to hire the best person for the job. Their employees seem to be doing very well for their company. Which of them were hired because of their race and not their qualifications?
