Not quite as fascinating, but has anyone posted the
Netflix rental map yet?
Pretty sure you could make a very accurately detailed ethnic and economic demographic map based on Netflix data. I'm familiar with a couple of these cities, and it's pretty clear that:
- Milk & Mad Men is enjoyed by upscale professionals in the very heart of urban areas and on college campuses. For instance, Chicago: the corridor between Northwestern/Evanston/McCormickville/North Chicago along Lake Michigan are probably mostly youngish people, but predominanetly white (Tyler Perry films are barely rented here).
- Tyler Perry movies are rented almost exclusively by predominately black neighborhoods and zip codes. Again, Chicago for instance, Tyler Perry movies are popular in southwest Chicago, Gary IN, etc. but are hardly rented anywhere else.
- Last Chance Harvey, Changeling, Gran Tarino (ie, Dustin Hoffman and Clint Eastwood) are more popular in zip codes with old, blue-blood money...West Chester and Oak Brook
- Paul Blart is very popular in suburban areas with middle income whites, places like Franklin Park, Northlake, Melrose Park, Addison, Oaklawn, Aslip, Bridgeview, but not very popular in downtown Chicago and along the Lake Michigan corridor to Evanston.
Boston looks about the same. Generally: young urbans and professionals like Mad Men and Milk. Black neighborhoods rent Tyler Perry. White suburbs rent Paul Blart, etc. Old rich white people like Clint Eastwood.
