I never got the hate that Sklansky gets around here. And, as another hot take, I think his poker books are good.

Wait is it a hot take that Theory of Poker or Limit Holdem for Advanced Players are good? They're good, man!
01-21-2019 , 11:37 PM
I have no idea. They are good though. Then again I’m ****ing terrible at poker so it doesn’t exactly take the Shakespeare of poker to improve my game. I even read helmuth’s book back in the day and it probably helped.

I'm going to guess you guys might not have read a certain set of emails that we're not allowed to talk about. (At least I think they get deleted every time they are mentioned or linked.)

Like nearly every single DS post is him either explaining how brilliant he is or remarking about how dumb the rest of humanity is. It's grating and obviously liable to create heat, almost by design. And honestly if he'd just write as though he was addressing co-equals instead of lecturing students he'd probably be an okay poster.

OTOH, I legitimately admire how thick his skin is; the harshest criticism just rolls off his back. Also, his poker books are solid. Also, his stand on the Eli affair is ethical and honorable.

He's usually posting like he's the smartest guy in the room. He's not always wrong. And he enjoys posting about nuances in discussions that he thinks people are missing when fairly often it's because they don't care (and of those times, often rightly imo, but no one bats 1.000). But people here often routinely miss his point, often due to hasty reading, jumping to conclusions, and not actually thinking about what he says. He definitely gets undue dogpiling when it'd be much better to not respond unless you're really sure of the point he's making. His perspective is usually unique and considered, even if it's not always something everyone cares about, and to that end, he's great to have around. His signal-to-noise is super high, even if your radio isn't always tuned in.

Poker books obviously good. Any hate on TOP or HEFAP is due to them not being super applicable to most online micro to midstakes games a the height of the boom, which might be true but it doesn't make them wrong.

If I know what lol at you is talking about I'm not sure how you guys wouldn't know.

I mean, not everyone misses his point all the time, but he definitely takes some SHATS from some folks who are way off base.

Yeah, I responded to his post and was just going to say that it was good, but I was afraid that would come off as something other than genuine so I had to add another sentence or two to make it clear I wasn't trolling lol... Weird times around here, huh?

Helmuth's book was the first I ever read and I'm still playing for a living lol... But then again, I'd consider that book garbage today and it wasn't very hard to get ahead of the curve back in 2004.

The level of self-own going on in that thread is hard to fathom. One of my favourite threads in a while. Juan and bundy start off demanding to know why they are so unfairly banned and go on to give the most comprehensive possible demonstration of the reasons.

I think David has the occasional good post, but plenty of them have no practical value.

For example, the point he makes about amnesty in the main Trump thread is correct.

However, the reality of our political situation, for anyone who has been paying attention, is that pointing this out is not going to convince anyone of anything. In 2-3 Scaramuccis, Trump can go back to claiming that Amnesty is categorically wrong and never going to happen. Someone can pull up his prior statement and he'll just fake news/handwave it away. And it won't matter because nothing matters.

I was actually talking about the Eli Elezra AMA thread, but that ATF politics thread is good too. Too many posts too quickly to keep up with it, but I've dropped in a few times for some lols.

I think it was Jman who was asking what the o/u was before it turned into Stormfront, and I think they're pretty much there at this point.

I drop in on an actual deplorable forum, although I've been mostly absent recently. I can assure you that thread isn't even close.

David has an...interesting history and some things that are hard to get past. Definitely a complicated dude.

LOL I spent some time in NVG reading other threads. Leaves me wondering why grown people acting like dicks in politics is somehow a bigger headache than that forum.

NVG is something else. Impossible to explain or justify or understand.

I think the person who coined the phrase "It is what it is" had NVG in mind.
