Girls suspended from school for refusing to remove "I Love Boobies!" breast cancer awareness bracelets

I think this is over the top, especially given that the bracelets hadn't caused any problems, but some of the defenses of the bracelets are incredulous:

Quote:
She said some are immature about the word, but said that because it is in the context of a breast cancer awareness bracelet, it does not have two meanings.
Are we really supposed to believe that this slogan was designed with entirely innocent motives? I mean, if you've never heard of these bracelets and you see a girl wearing one, is your first thought going to be "Oh... hmmm.... she probably supports breast cancer awareness"? No, you're going to be curious about her hitherto unexplained adventurous side and so you'll try to casually find a way to refer to it. She'll grin, say it's "not what you think" and then launch into a speech about breast cancer. You'll nod, say "that's interesting" and "I'll definitely do that", because you're in an agreeable mood, and you will do that later, because you affirmed that you would and it comes with positive associations. So, the bracelets are likely to be a very effective means of raising breast cancer awareness. But we're supposed to believe that that their creators foresaw completely different reasons for their efficacy.

She should be suspended.

This whole cancer awareness and having walks for everything is just getting ridiculous. Who here is not 'aware' of breast cancer. Burn every yellow bracelet and cancer band. I have had multiple family members die of cancer but i'm not going to devote my life to becoming a cancer whore. Just give some money to research and be done with it.

Also what is with women being obsessed with marathons? Is there any worse form of exercise than running for 20 miles? And then they whine and miss work because of their injuries. Wahhhh maybe your worn down 40 year old body was not meant to run for hours at a time.

Seems straight forward to me.

They should just do what happened here, the colour pink is now synonymous with breast cancer awareness charities.

(funnily enough through a legal wording situation that pink breast cancer Victorinox Swisscard tool kit is technically illegal to carry in the UK, though no one will ever in a million years be arrested for having one)

A worse form of exercise I would imagine would be to cook and clean and do laundry for someone like you. And yeah, those damn women shouldn't be missing their (non equal paying) work.

Extremely disappointing content for a thread an OP titled "I Love Boobies!" posted in the middle of a weekend night US time. I know I'm not the only one who assumed someone got drunk and posted pictures of titties all over the thread.

Kid should go to school to raise awareness of testicular cancer with a raisin pinned to her shirt and see if they ban raisins. Sexism imo.

I don't what to say. It's amazing that someone can get upset and be negative about an action that helps bring awareness to a disease that effects millions of people each year. This has no effect on you whatsoever and yet all you can say are negative things. If you don't want to where a yellow bracelet then don't, but calling someone a whore because they do is beyond reproach. I think you should be banned for this ridiculous and offensive post, gimmick or no gimmick.

I can't see how you could have envisioned it being about anything other than breast cancer awareness. You must be an immature boy.

you sir have been an A+ troll. Now please reveal whose gimmick you are.

booby: 1. a stupid person. Dunce. 2. slang, sometimes vulgar. a female breast.
adjective: boobyish.

Next thing you know, liberals will be defending the right for a kid to wear a shirt that says: "Gotta MILF?"

Or: "Save your ANUS! Get fingered today!"

I sort of agree with nick_van_exel (zomg). Awareness can be valuable, but a significant amount it's the device of those who care more about enhancing their image than actually helping the cause.
12-19-2010 , 11:29 AM
I kinda agree with nick, actually. It seems to me that we're already at the saturation point for breast cancer awareness, and I would be very surprised if the various campaigns (eg NFL pink shoes, hell, you can get pink GARBAGE CANS in my neighborhood) had any significant affect either on awareness or funding available for research. It's more an exercise in signaling.

That said, I don't have an opinion on the suspension.

Wow, I would have thought it was a slam dunk you'd say it's a textbook case of statist regulation preventing individual freedoms.

We're already talking about a public school here. This is like the least disgusting thing that happens there. It's like getting your panties in a wad because detainees at camp X-ray only get four fish sticks instead of eight.

Now you're against saving women's breasts? YGOS?

Well, considering that approximately 50% of the population of a middle school IS immature boys, that is exactly why the school is doing this.

I am generally against the automatic "slippery slope" argument that is immediately thrown forward when arguing against bans like these, but would all of you saying "OMG it's about breast cancer, lighten up" really be allright if the same 11-14 year old girls (maybe your daughters) were wearing bracelets saying "I Love Ballsacks" in support of testicular cancer awareness?

I mean its all subjective and open to interpretation but they can easily claim the above yes's without difficulty. Vulgarity is a slam dunk. Obscenity - if they used breasts instead of boobies it would be harder to judge but they can push this one (not that they need to at this point). Obscenity is pretty much a slam dunk given just how subjective that one is.

Profanity is a grey area, you yanks are weird with swearing in general and if there is a religious teacher involved it can get weirder still. Double entendre, well the campaign slogan is pretty much the definition of it plus see Dvaut:

Im not saying its the right thing to do. But then im extremely relaxed about swearing, double entendre and general obscenity. I also dont run a school. Even if you assume they are wrong to do it they certainly have all the grounds in the world to do so which is what i was saying.

The fact the kids are suing the school is hilarious. Isnt there several specific cases where it was specifically shown in case law that freedom of speech does not extend to slogans on school ground?

If you were involved in a conversation with a small group of men & women @ work about breast cancer, would you, while asking a question, or directing a comment towards a woman in the conversation, refer to her breasts as "boobies".....
I think not. It's immature. the "vulgar" statement comes from the dictionary.
12-19-2010 , 02:52 PM
Of course not. I'd call them ba-jungas and "what, me worry?" them

I think you need to work on using curses in sentences. These sentences are awkward.

It's just not necessary. If they want to raise awareness for breast cancer they could wear one of the other thousand bands or wear pink everyday. I have seen very young girls wearing these bracelets in my area and it is a bit strange. The use of semi-profane slogans is just a reaction to the over saturation of the cancer awareness market.

Yes.

In fact most women in my experience find it cute.
