Seriously rara, this is some historically bad posting. Appealing to ignorance over simple math?

that is all fine and well, but when i take contract jobs, which is basically the only way to get a perm job in tech these days, i typically am not offered health care.

last one was $50/hr for 18 months, so ldo no subsidies.

so i'd be looking at $800/month for the 'coverage i am use to'.

lol, that's not happening. ship the beamer and tax me. if i get sick, i'll run it off a cliff

LOL Rara. "I don't want that $5,000 raise! I'll lose $3,000!"

Only you could bitch and moan about a raise.

That 5k raise equates to $14.42/week.....

assuming no state income tax

when you guys are done lol'ing at turning down an $18/week raise, can you tell me if i am missing something in my post. i want to support this, but i'm buying beamers and taking tax penalties from what i can see if i ever take another contract job....which is guaranteed to happen.

Is there a subsidy schedule published on the net? Your example doesn't seem likely.

Since you can get insurance whenever you need now, even if you're sick, there's probably no reason to buy it right now. The fine for no insurance is really low, less than $100 right now (or possibly 1% if you make over a certain amount). It will increase from 1% to 2.5% of income in the coming years, but that might not be until 2017 or so.

My numbers are probably off somewhat, but this is the gist of it.

They're not chasing for the fine. It comes from your IRS refund. If you owe a fine, you better make sure you fill the W-4 correctly. You definitely want to owe money on your taxes.
10-01-2013 , 12:39 PM
even at 2.5%, thats only $2500 vs. $800/month. easy choice. wait to get really sick and then either signup or take the beamer off the cliff.

i've never gotten a personal plan while contracting and for $800/month, I could rent a damn studio almost, even in the bay area.

This statement is so laughable I do not even know where to begin. First they had to know there would be a lot of traffic. And if they did not then they are incompetent. Apple was able to handle a lot more traffic by magnitudes due to the OS updates. And last time I checked Apple has a market cap of roughly $425 billion and the US government has a market cap of infinity. So there is no excuse for this happening except for incompetence or poor planning or both.

And I am fairly sure the drop down menus are not due to the traffic since I was on the site at 7 a.m. E.T. and it was doing it then. I doubt there was a lot of traffic on the site at that time. Unlike right now or later today/tonight.

Yes and yes - it is not likely. In the family of 4, $50k salary example:
  • $50k/yr - family has to pay a maximum of 6.73% of their income for insurance premiums, the rest is subsidized. Silver plan = $3,363/yr.
  • $55k/yr - family has to pay a maximum of 7.47% of the income for insurance premiums, the rest is subsidized. Silver plan =$4,111/yr.
Their premiums go up $748 after getting a $5k raise.

This also doesn't take into account the fact that the poverty level guidelines are adjusted each year for inflation, which would slightly lower their maximum contribution.

I see rara has been putting in some hard work.

Sure, for young single people this is a viable option. A family of 4 has virtually no chance of not needing to go to the doctor, though.

yes, because a bunch of servers pushing an update and accepting no input is much more complicated. plus, apple ios updates are flawless ldo

So even if you make $500K a year, you won't get fined more than $5K.

If you make $100K, the fine would be $2,500.

Rara is so concerned with the cost difference between bronze silver and gold he hasn't looked that up any time in the last 3 years. seemslegit.jpg

People hate Obamacare so much that the site is running slow due to people avoiding it in droves.

Looks like rates are finally up for BCBS in VA. My current BCBS plan is a PPO network for $90/mo with a $3k deductible/100% coverage after. Cheapest catastrophic plan with an HMO network is $163/mo with $6k deductible and $6350 OOP max. Double the price, half the coverage. Nice!

Also ran the rates for a 55-year-old and cheapest bronze plan was $378/mo. A silver plan for husband/wife was $900/mo for the cheapest option. Sounds pretty affordable!

In this thread going to a site means you support what is on the site.
