The Great Government Shutdowns of 2018 The Great Government Shutdowns of 2018

Doug Jones ideally should be slightly left of center, ala Joe Manchin. No other way to survive long-term in Alabama (and even as such, he'll have an uphill climb).

This is smart politics.

In all probability he won't survive the next election anyway so he might as well do some good while he's there.

Re: this. Everyone should call their Senators who held the line and congratulate them, maybe even throw them some money. These guys will be under tremendous pressure to cave, especially if there are polls where they are taking more blame than Republicans, or if the markets start to dip and the donors lose their ****. So give them some positive reinforcement.

Why wouldn't Jones just pull a Richard Selby and switch parties before the next election?
01-20-2018 , 01:16 PM
Because he'd 100% lose a Republican primary.
01-20-2018 , 01:17 PM
McConnell up there crying crocodile tears over vulnerable children and health care.

So despicable.

Didn't know Wynn was a deplorable, never going there again

Where can you go that doesn't fund a deplorable?

Basically all the execs and 1% types gave to Trump. You'd have to boycott pretty much everything.

A good alternate to avoid going to hotel chains would be AirBnB. They're based in San Francisco and have been attacked by the Trump-supporting hotel industry since they started up.

This thing couldn't possibly last too long, right? After a few days, the parties will see whose ratings are benefitting most from this and the party losing popularity will give in.

You wouldn't think, but the two sides seem so far apart. I'm not seeing a clear way forward.

Bellagio? Brief search says owned by mostly public MGM

My take is that the shutdown ends soon, with the Dems caving (in exchange for another Lucy pulling the football promise from Repubs) and then Trump tweets gleefully for a year about the Dems screwing up the shutdown they caused.

Pelosi says this is about the deficit. They have made very bipartisan offers to the republicans that should be totally conventional but they dont want it. Probably everyone knows how dumb the tax bill was and not funding the gouvernment is how you pay for it.

Was Kerkorian a deplorable when he was around? I want to say no... but the private investment firm he started is second biggest shareholder behind Vanguard.

Quick search shows him donating to McCain, Biden and Pelosi in 2008. So seems like just a business man playing all sides.

A government shutdown does not save the government money, it costs the government money. In every prior shutdown everyone ended up getting paid who had to take furloughs.

Over time I've become more and more convinced that the only reason Trump ran for President in the first place is his deep animosity and hatred toward Barack Obama. At times it appears that Trump's sole motivation is to undo and reverse everything Obama achieved while he was in office - regardless of whether or not it's good policy. I really believe that Trump hates Obama with a passion.
Someone linked this a while back. Pretty sure its accurate.

This is smart politics.
Its the same "smart politics" that lead to Hillary Clinton being the nominee. There is nothing smart about being naive enough to think Doug Jones gets re-elected by being a DINO.

The Democratic Party needs to absolutely give up on "smart politics". For starters, theyre ****ing horrible at it.

But mostly a MASSIVE MAJORITY of American citizens PREFER what they are SUPPOSED to stand for. Just go out there and force progress down the country's throat and everything will take care of itself.

Trying to play "smart politics" is a big part of the current state of our nation.

the smart politics doug jones tried to play was to keep the race local, keep the external big names out of it, and it appears to have payed off. If Nancy Pelosi were going around campaigning for him, we'd have Senator Pedobear right now. This vote didn't matter. The NSA one maybe kinda did. Neither are good looks, but we gotta give the guy a little leeway for the time being. Hopefully he knows he's doomed and will never win again, so when Dems retake all the things he actually votes with them now and then.

The Best Deal Maker™ just using the tried-and-true tactic of first meeting in the middle then rescinding that offer and demanding a higher price.

He got elected solely because Roy Moore was a pedophile. And even then he BARELY won. Ive still never even heard the guy say anything. Im glad he won but chances are he sucks. Not that it matters much but it could if he ends up playing a pivotal role in getting single payer through or something important like that.
