Doug Jones is acutely aware that he's walking a political tight rope, (i.e. a Democrat representing a deeply red state), and that he'll be up for re-election to a full six year term in 2020. If the Alabama GOP had not committed political suicide by nominating Roy Moore, Jones (very likely) would not have been elected; so his being in the Senate [at all] is pretty much a fluke.
Nobody can predict the future, but Doug Jones has to assume that Alabama Republicans won't be so stupid two years from now - they won't nominate another Roy Moore and make it easy for him. Assuming the Alabama GOP nominates a non-crazy candidate who is properly vetted, (i.e. no "pedo problem" or other embarrassing personal history), there's an excellent chance that the GOP will retake Doug Jones Senate seat. Jones's only chance of winning re-election two years from now is being seen (and perceived) as not-too-liberal - and he knows that.
If Doug wins re-election two years from now, he might vote [occasionally] with the Dems, but nobody should expect him to go overboard progressive. This is Alabama - not Vermont. Doug understands his home state pretty well. He's a pragmatist and he's smart. Hopefully he'll play his cards right and be re-elected two years from now. (It's a good feeling to know I'm not the only "librul" in Alabama ...)
