Mercenary Guards Jump Ship as Somali Pirates Remain Undeterred
Quote:
Dec. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The owners of the Biscaglia, a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker, paid thousands of dollars for three guards to protect it from Somali pirates.

It didn’t work. Brigands struck on Nov. 28, seizing the 27,350-ton vessel and its crew of 25 Indians as it headed toward the Suez Canal. After failing to repulse the pirates with deafening sonic devices, the unarmed guards jumped ship to escape and were plucked from the Gulf of Aden by a German navy helicopter.

Lol, so even the high paid security guards aren't allowed to carry guns, instead they have a high tech version of a blowhorn to annoy the pirates. Justice.

Good call, it gets much worse towards the end!

I don't understand the proactive moderation on this forum. If a thread sucks then it will be banished to back pages by the will of the people... no need for the mods to randomly start locking everything so that they feel important. Call me old-fashioned but I guess I'm laissez-faire about forum moderation as well.

More seriously, there are some threads that are just going to lead to problems or are heading that way. Better a little proactivity now than a bunch of clean-up and infracting to do later imo.

lol. Have you seen a poorly modded forum? It gets out of hand really ****ing quickly. Some forums I visit will have a period of lax moderation, and the place will literally blow up in a matter of days.

Does that explain your avatar's hair?

lol. I enjoy it. Which is why I'd never be a moderator. Too much work for absolutely nothing to gain.

You get some 2p2 books IIRC.

Why? Maybe the people who would inevitably cause problems/get infractions should be allowed to do so. Then eventually they can be removed from the forum, and you remove the dependency on this sort of moderation.

Let them fail imo, ldo.

Well, it was a fairly neutral and short lived experience (the former was disappointing, the latter expected)

Given that it was neutral, I don't feel TOO stupid about it. Basically I had $510, put it on Scottrade on Tuesday, and I figured the bailout for the auto companies was coming soon, so I bought 117 GM stocks at 4.25 Tuesday, which went up to about 4.38 (I think) that day, so I was sittin' pretty with $520 in my account, lol. Next day, of course the stocks plummeted to 3.63 (zomg!) and I had around $430 (my initial investment was $497, not counting the fees, and the random $5 I had left over). But this was all pretty irrelevant to me, I was just waiting on the bailout, my only regret was that I didn't wait one more day to buy, as I'd have been able to get the 3.63 price. That night CNN told me Bush was going to announce the plan tomorrow (omg just in time, I thought), and he did this morning. Stocks quickly shot up from 3.63 to 4.38 (or so), and stayed there for like a minute, and then pretty quickly fell down to 4.08 (gg imo). I said I'd wait till the CEO gave his announcement at 11am, decided to forgo that plan when they rose back to $4.17, sold all my shares for a loss of something like $23 total.

And then right after selling they went back up to $4.30 or so, of course, lol (literally seconds after ) and then once the CEO said "Hi" they went straight back down to 4.08, and then finished for the day at $4.25 (lmao)

So, I lost $23, which is pretty much neutral for me. I'm a little disappointed as I had planned to use the money to help finance my first handgun purchase, but, I'll get it anyways in a month or so. Learned a bit, and as 13th said to me, considering I know nothing about stocks, I'm pretty lucky I only lost 20 bucks :P

2+2 the company would rather have more members than less for obvious reasons. It's better to keep people around and teach them how to be good posters than to just ban everyone. We only ban the people who can't be taught.

I never said you should "just ban everyone." You're assuming people who might be problematic will not learn to behave better when they begin to get warnings and infractions. (But that they somehow would simply because you lock a thread before they ever got around to reading it?)

Of course 2+2 wants more members. They also want more threads rather than less, and better people posting in them. How those things are actually accomplished is what's important.

HAY

so I haven't really played teh pokerz on teh intart00bz since that whole netteller thing a few years ago. That just happened to come at a time when I got really busy with other real-life stuff (job change, new kid, etc) and I just never came back to it.

I basically just play in a home game once a week and go to tunica every once in a while.

So, I want to play the pokers.

1) where are the fish? I like pokerstars (and I think it's the only site that takes US players that I still have an account with)

2) what software are the kids using now? the software forum faq is like 200 years old.

3) how do I get money to/from the sites?

Now I want

As for #3, you can use an e-check at Stars. I was in similar situation as you and stopped playing until I just started again while free from work for awhile. I'm just doing Stars now (formerly 26 accounts, but most are closed to US now), but FTP seems to be another option if Stars isn't enough.

I mean, I was just in it to buy and sell after the bailout. I had a friend do that with the citigroup bailout and he made 10x his money auto-bailout wasn't big enough I guess?

If your friend really did make 10x his money on Citi it would have been on options, not stock ownership. If you had bought at GMs low you would have made a nice profit, but the bailout has been assumed to some degree for a while now.
