Al Jazeera's TV network is way better than their website imo. But their iPhone app is most of my international day-to-day news reading.

A lot of The Economist is reporting on topical issues, since they are a weekly publication and all, and they aren't as focused on whatever the hot story is at the moment. So it's not really an ideal news source if you want to know about that big thing that happened last night or whatever.

AJC for local news. Which is terrible.

Has anyone said "All of them" yet?

(Or more specifically, "All of them, any of them that um, have, um, been in front of me over all these years.")

I'll admit that I thought Al Jazeera was a shady news organization until I actually watched it. It's good news though and I think most people will change their mind about their news after they see it as well. People just haven't been exposed to Al Jazeera enough to know better.

1.) Drudge Report
2.) Twitter
3.) Huff Post
4.) Nytimes

I still haven't got into this twitter thing. I've heard that too much tweeting makes one a ****, but I'm willing to give it a shot. How do I go about getting good news on twitter?

I'm not really sure. I benefit from twitter news mainly by way of legit news organizations capitalizing on and reporting tweets by the common man there on the ground at the site where whatever-it-is is going down.

I don't tweet but I follow various reporters and bloggers, greenwald likes to tweet interesting links and stuff.

I have problems with 1&3 even though I load and glance there. Aggregators simply sexy up headlines and try to get hits for their own revenue. They are NOT a news SOURCE. Most modern nations have a well-funded reliable state-sponsored news network. Its about time to ditch the current news part of PBS from the kids shows and niche boredom stuff, and start over. One of the most shaming things I've experienced as an American is turning on NPR or PBS and they have bought programming from the BBC.

That's it?
05-08-2011 , 05:44 PM
Why the **** would that shame you? Why shouldn't American networks buy BBC programming? The BBC is a world-class media network and makes great shows. Did it shame you when 'Merkin movie theatres were showing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Goddamn Chinese takin over these days amirite?!

Al Jazeera hands down.

The problem with Al Jazeera is that they still have some "red lines"
like the saudi royals for example

Right, but if you know this and take it into account they add a valuable perspective and cover things that aren't covered at all in the west.
05-09-2011 , 11:34 AM
Oh I have no doubt about it
plus their sport network is just top top notch
05-09-2011 , 12:47 PM
yeah I thought Al Jazeera was pretty much terrorist propoganda right up until I was traveling in Africa and it was pretty much the only news station ever on (occasionally I would come across the BBC, or if the place was really nice, CNN International). No joke, I was surprised not only that there were women news anchors, but that they were dressed in Western clothes with no head coverings. Being forced to watch it made me realize that it's a legit news source.

Why doesn't it shame you? Maybe I have some residual American exceptionalism
mythos I haven't rooted out yet, but I find it galling that a nation the size of Louisiana can churn out quality news on a scale and depth of nothing in this country, public or private. The Economist has no peer left, if you could have called Time, Newsweek, or USNews&World Report peers in the good old days. When NYT falls, or sells out, there won't be a single large source news gatherer left in this country. Why isn't it shaming or alarming that no hunger for information exists in the nation as a whole to the point of paying for it?

Colbert himself wouldn't have said it better
