The US had almost nothing to do with starting WWI. At the end Wilson tried to have a much less punishing peace treaty, but the US wasn't in the driver's seat. Also, it was more than just the Treaty of Versailles that was an issue for Germany at the end of the war. They had a socialist revolution from 1918-1919.

How does the US staying out of the war have anything to do with Russia entering the war? (Russia entered in August 1914)

France was preparing for war and still pissed about Germany beating them in 1871. German/Austria-Hungary was looking to be even more aggressive starting when the Kaiser fired Bismarck in 1890 and beyond. Russia was preparing for war. It was a powder keg.

The US didn't enter the war until April 6, 1917. Millions of people had already been killed by then. Just in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 there were 1.2 million casualties. I'm trying to find casualties by week/month, but no luck. WW1 started out in a fury though and lots of people were killed in the first week even in 1914.

How is it that this place, which I've been told is a liberal echo chamber, has so many people on the pro-business side of the argument? It'd be one thing if he was asking how to like, rub one out, at work, but he's just trying to find something to fill the down time. I mean, the implication is that all you guys are productive all the time when you're at work, and I like, have met maybe one person(?) in real life that fits that description.

You may be missing some of the history of that poster.

Don't play poker at work. It's very different than just surfing the internet. Just like porn at work. You may get away with both for a while - but eventually you'll probably get fired. Too much FB or 2p2 - you get a talking to before they fire you.

If you're actively taking steps to conceal your behavior...

Also fireable. My work blocks 2p2. But weirdly early in the day I can usually load it. By 4pm or if I'm on the VPN it's blocked every time. It must be less traffic = some default router or something.

So I can see 2p2 sometimes, and not others. But if I put a proxy on my computer to view 2p2 - that's fireable.

Get mad.

Why would anyone find it amusing that someone works for a toilet paper manufacturer?

Nerds: a high student who wants to study CS tells me he has never done any programming. I find that shocking but ok. I suggested he may want to try it to see if it's something he'd like. What language should I recommend? AFAIK Java or C++ would be required in college but maybe Python is better for a beginner. I lean toward Java. What say you?

Python and it is not even close.

Is he high or high AF? This could make a difference in choice.

if he's real high, show him some assembly language and call it a day

"Are you high?" is ~what I thought when he asked, but who am I to crush a kid's dream? I'd rather it happen naturally.

Go on...

Sigh. Just another temp? That's like calling the military of the country you're about to bomb and asking them kindly to relocate so nothing of actual value is damaged in your massive waste of munitions.

Makes me laugh that supbro sporadically spammed forums all over the internet with the same OP over multiple years.

Two Vietnams worth of war dead, and the best argument for the war is that it was hard to specifically foresee that the war would pave the way for Hitler.

The good of WW1 was that Germany didn't win. They were goosestepping militaristic *******s before WW1 and 100 years of German hegemony would have sucked.

It's not likely that Germany would have won a victory that would have enabled them to establish any kind of hegemony over Europe. In any case, it's hard to imagine a darker timeline for Europe than the one we actually got. Pre-WWI Germany pioneered social insurance and was (slowly) progressing towards a democratic system.

Science news for the day, gene mutation may cause people to be night owls, and around 50% of US adults have HPV with around 1 in 5 adults having the cancer-causing version of the disease.

Maybe, but Germany was on an entirely different level than anyone else in the world in 1914 as far as military technology, military professionalism, and penetration into the social fabric. Hitler was different for sure, but he didn't create a military worshipping culture. A German occupation of France (and most of Europe) and invasion of Russia seems perfectly plausible if they are a little more successful in WW1.
