Imagine it like this:
Small side: There's 2 of you left.
If you don't take the biggest favorite and your opponent does, he has the advantage on you, every week.
Big side: There's 2,000 of you left.
The biggest favorite is 80% to win the game, and 50% of entrants take them.
That means 20% of the time half the entrants are gone which really increases your equity. So if you can steer clear of the favorite and take say a 70% likely to win, you can stand to put yourself in a much better position to win.
As the small side gets bigger, and the big side gets smaller, these start to merge more. But with the number of entrants you posted, it's fairly clear what the correct strategy is.
