Does this make sense?

I'm putting togethor a playoff pool for a bunch of friends. I'll refer to Monday's 'superbowl winning odds' and sell off portions of a grand. Contestants can purchase teams for different prices, winner gets the grand.
Examples;
Arizona Cardinals cost $62
Houston Texans cost $8
Indy Colts cost $332

Essentially a rake-free way to gamble it up with my buddies. Obviously the cost of all teams combined is $1000.

Make sense?

What happens if some teams don't sell? Prize pool is reduced or you (as organizer) have to eat those teams?

How do you determine who gets which team if more than one buddy wants a certain team (which is almost 100% guaranteed to happen)?

I'll eat the excess...there won't be much.

Email goes out...first to respond gets the teams they want.

Obv this is a just for fun endeavor that won't net me anything...unless I start the pool by taking a team who's odds I like?

Sounds like a recipe for a bunch of friends who are pissed at each other in the end, especially if a few guys want the same teams and one of them wins after he happened to beat out the others by a minute or two on the response time.

But maybe it's just me. BTW - I like the idea in general, minus the minor issue of strife over who gets to pick whom...

just run it as an auction where the total of all winning bids must total 1000.

So if colts get won for 450 bucks the rest of the teams cant cost more than 550 combined.

Actually, I like this idea only I would run it as an auction with MINIMUM $1000 as the total cost - i.e - start the bidding at the price you were originally going to charge for each team, and if more than one guy wants a team they have a bidding war and any extra $$ goes into the prize pool...

At that point you might have more guys taking a shot on some of the long-shot teams near the end as the potential winnings might make it worth a stab if you get some heavy bids on the favorites to start with, and everyone has the same chance of picking the favorites - at least as long as they are willing to shell out for them they do.

Just remember the order in which auctions open will radically impact final pricing. Why is it necessary to start the bidding at a given price other than 1 dollar.

Yeah, just run straight auction with set prize pool and every team begins with $1.

We did one at work every year, I still remember someone cleaning up with the Steelers 4 years ago or whenever they were the 6 seed. Paid like 2-3% of the pool or something crazy.

Well, OP originally stated that he wanted a prize pool of $1000, and without a minimum price to start with there's a chance it might not reach that amount IMO. Either way could work I suppose, but if the OP already had a price set for each team then chances are the prize pool will end up higher than $1000 rather than lower (assuming starting prices = $1000 of course)
