This brings back memories. I used to frequent Sandown, Moonee Valley, Caulfield, Flemington, Geelong etc... when I was a kid. Lived in Melbourne for a few years. Haven't been back in ages, pretty sure it's all different now. Is the Melbourne cup still raced in Flemington? Love to go back sometime.

I loved the Colin Hayes, Michael Clarke tandem back then, my first big Melbourne Cup win was At Talaq. LOL surprise myself, still remembering the horse name. Kiwi and Bonecrusher were the other big names. Geez, I feel old. Pretty sure most of you weren't even born when At Talaq won.

Over the years, I've learned that Trifecta's or even key's are such sucker bets. Hard enough choosing the winner. Somehow I always seem to wager on only multiple tri's, it's just so much sweeter when you win. The rush of staring at the tote board seeing how much the pay off is indescribable, very degenerate. Love it!
GL mates!

As a long time horse degen, this is one event that I truly hope to attend before I take that dirt nap.

How big of an event is it in Australia? Would you compare it to the Derby? Super Bowl? etc.. for us here in USA.
Australian racing has always fascinated me and I've been know to bet a few bucks on what is for me, late night racing from Aus., because of the small American pools, you can make some money if you find the right horse.

I really can't see how they beat Septimus, but I guess in a 24 horse field anything can happen. I'll have a small wager wrapped around that horse and be watching tonight for me, @ around 11:00 pm est.
Good luck to everyone there, I am very jealous and hope you have a great time.

SimonBarSinister - To answer your question - the race really does stop the nation, and being my first year living in Melbourne, it literally brings this state to a stand still!
Should be a good day (thought I would jump on 2p2 to see if there were any hot tips while the gf gets ready haha)

Ngakin is correct, its a **** day for racing standards if your into that, but if you wanna party hard with 100k + people at an event the whole countrys watching, place to be. Need to be there to experience it. 2 years ago when i was betting in the bookies ring before the main race, guy infront of me was carrying a bag, we walked up to the biggest bookie in melbourne, and he opened the bag and asked for 5 million on the favorite, forget the name (was american horse, lost i kno that). I was shocked, bookie took about 2 mins to think about it, and called a few people, i couldnt believe it. **** like that goes down...

Yeh, seems like a place I would love to be. Definitely on the short list of things to do before I die. Melbourne Cup and Dubai World Cup, top two right now.

Not really sure how Aus. betting works, is it pari-mutual wagering with the track taking a percentage or is there just random bookies floating around and you can shop for the best price? It's really interesting to me how this works, seems like it would add a whole new element to handicapping. Good luck again and I hope you guys that are going have a great time.

there is a TAB, which is takes 115% on betting, works by moving odds accoridng to amount of money in pool, this place takes all the bets in australia, there are 5 TAB's i can go to within 2 min drive from my home, the government loves them becuase they turn over so much...atm, 4 hours before the race, theres been about 25 mil waged alone through the TAB, that includes place bets and stuff. At the track however, there is a bookies ring, where people get licence and they offer fixed odds (better to bet at) they take 103% of the money, just to try and get more customers, these people need licences, and theres probs 300 of them at the track. As for private bookies, theres plenty of them, but there not spoken about. Im sure the track takes money from bookies licences, maybe from TAB but very small percentage, TAB has nothing to do with fleminton race course to an extent.

Wow, what a race! You run 2 miles and the winner is decided by less than an inch. Unreal.
Bart Cummings wins his 12th Melbourne Cup and goes off at 92-1 here in America. Congrats on an amazing race and an amazing crowd. Hard to tell on TV but looked like over 100,000 people there. Just awesome.

I had an awesome day, the marquee we were in was definitley worth the $720 and it included reserve seats in the lawn stand, RIGHT ON THE FINISH LINE. It was epic.

As far as betting goes I had an unbelievable sick run on races 1 - 6 and had my $10k up to about $30k and by the end of race 10 I was down to $22k but couldn't be happier, races 1 - 7 I was serious and then races 8 - 10 I was just a drunken degen hahah

private bookie in our marquee ftw

$12k profit ftw
