at hs reunion, brought laptop cause thought i may slip in some work but nah, so will be missing r3 and r4 this weekend

going to be hungover for a good week but was good to see a bunch of people i haven't seen in 20+ years

dfs going well, like 3rd week in a row i had a top 10 lineup or something which is pretty good but alas just a few inches from a real payout


it's nice roi for 4 days but alas it's also pretty sad to not even double it despite getting a top 10 finish

in cash streets got almost no takers of my h2hs this week and pretty much broke even on that despite getting 6/6 through which is usually a guaranteed good week in cash so feels like standard runbad

swamped with catching up on work from not working last weekend and prepping for a weeklong canoe trip in the middle of nowhere (i'll also not do latter rounds again this week since no cell reception on the allagash)

had to eyeball solve my dfs lines based on getting projections done 3 min before lock so only have one cash line and basically nobody booked any h2hs this week and i was obviously not regging anything without a lineup i trusted so basically running a dry cash line this week



also missed actioning a lot of the really early morning stuff but managed to still sim it all so have all the lines that were on pinny still

there were a ton this week, like 1.5x more than the last major and about 5x more than usual, these times my lack of 100% automation and travel laptop really get exposed doing 10k sims hundreds of times - 3 times i needed to reboot my laptop so was basically saving after every step so minimal work would be lost

i was always determined to transition to python but lacked the urgency, but i never want to deal with this amount of work and hassle again - also have bit more than usual actioned today and model took a big stand on a two big dogs in particular in Na & Mickelson so if they lose as expected it'll be painful but if they hit value town as my model suggests, it'll be one hell of a week - let's find out

gotta stop doing this when tired, everyone had basically same projection, i thought "woah that's ffed i certaintly can't action any of this" but then didn't proceed to step two and realize there was a bug but instead proceed simming the matchups for science and stuff

i need to harness my inner keanu and pause and think instead of blindly proceeding while waiting for coffee to be ready



basically over a hundred h2hs where they are all 50/50, fml i'm dumb

fixed the bug, it was an error in the weather adaptation i coded earlier this week that broke everything cause i accidentally included a step that basically negated a lot of the stuff that separated all the golfers

will re-sim now and post when i get a shot, probably only doing 1 dfs line too due to this snafu

also still haven't graded from two weeks ago as still catching up on work from the week i spent in the woods with no wifi

tons of low sample weirdness, going to have to review model re this issue, initial thoughts are to start incorporating prior month as an additional data bucket (previously last 3 months was the smallest sampled bucket) as that'll both emphasize the new "i'm playing in much weaker fields sg data" in addition to account for all the new guys who have been given a chance at the pga whom otherwise may still be golfing in stuff like korn ferry - tons of names i don't recognize this week - should probably also review standings from last week and see if that field was equally weak (guessing yes since it went haotong li vs pieters in a showdown)

one thing is for sure, there's never been a better time to a young golfer ranked somewhere between 200-500th best in the world

Are you able to paint a general picture on what about the weather is being considered in the model? Mainly curious as I was recently looking into weather's effects on scoring at MLB ballparks. There were some potentially mild relationships at some parks, but overall didn't identify much of a statistical relationship between total game scores and any of the weather variables generally quoted by the public as relevant.

A week in the woods actually sounds really nice. My cell phone broke the other day, and I was seriously considering just turning the service off entirely. Unfortunately I need a mobile device to authenticate my login to work accounts, so ended up buying a new phone...

interesting about the mlb info, i know some parks like sf have not much wind factor but others like wrigley do but i never looked at it extensively to see if it were a thing leaguewide etc, i tentatively favor hitters with good weather and wind blowing out and vice versa with pitchers in mlb dfs when making a personal judgement call (most guys project quite close to each other in mlb without much separation so when there's two similar options at similar prices i'll often defer to weather)



for golf there's a number of papers that do measure the impact of wind on ball flight at various speeds

problem is that this is more wind tunnel less actual field practice so as you mentioned vis a vis wind having different impacts at different parks it's really difficult to truly know if those gusts are going to be blocked by trees or not - while it hasn't been done holistically as a study, of the dozen or so times over the years when there was a big difference between am/pm conditions that gave one group a perceived advantage - not once had the disadvantaged group outperformed the advantaged group - this could low sample weirdness - but it seems pretty legit to me

a lot of what i do is taking real measurements and then using more helmuth white magic and less data science to then apply it to how it will impact my baseline scoring expectation - i then don't apply these until the very end so i can toggle it on and off for two separate sets of projections as someone who had a good tee time pre cut doesn't necessarily have one post cut and unless dealing with futures, all the h2hs from that point on are guys teeing off at the same time so need to bother weighing their stats regarding weather because whomever they are in a h2h against will have same conditions - this makes my life much easier, if vegas chose matchups based on perceived skill and not tee times then i'd have to calculate weather advantage 2 additional times for days 3 and 4

but anyway, i take this:



and convert that using duct tape and intuition into a system where thurs am has a 10% advantage over thurs pm

but today is extra special as thursday early am is extra clear so early am has a 10% advantage whereas late am and late pm only 5.4% and early afternoon have the worst start time so have a baseline of 0

this seems like a big deal, especially if we're applying it to big numbers like projected scoring, 10% on an expected score of 70 is a very big deal - so we can't use it on the whole number - fortunately, our model is based on an assumption that there is an average expected score for each course based off prior scoring results

we then take that average expected score and modify it based off a number of factors such as course fit, course history, track record of top finishes, etc so it's a 10% modifier off a number that may bring the differential between the expected score average to someone's personally tailored projected score

there's so much duct tape and white magic holding this all together that frankly i'm still shocked how much in agreement it is with vegas line setters simply because there's utterly no way they use the same methodologies as I and they'd probably recall in horror if they dove deep into my model and saw how it worked

I only glanced through the Abstract but this line is curious: "The results of this study show that runs scored, batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and home runs significantly increase while walks significantly decrease in warm weather compared to cold weather." I looked at 10 seasons of data and did not see a significant relationship between temperature and runs scored. I imagine that some scholarly articles exist that offer strong evidence in favor of weather having significant effects on the travelling distance of a batted ball, similar to the golf articles you mentioned, though. Still, I just haven't had the opportunity to read anything yet that convinces me it will consistently lead to higher scoring in MLB. Do your wind speed adjustments also account for wind direction somehow? Admittedly, wind direction is the only thing I didn't take a close look at yet. (Basically, I was sitting around one weekend afternoon having a few beers when this question popped into my head, so I coded up a quick correlation analysis. I didn't get as far as factoring in wind direction properly before I lost interest and went over to Circa to watch some games instead though).

interesting stuff, and yeah having some unexpectedly good success at mlb thus far so once i'm all caught up on everything could start to tinker with the very basic projections system i got for something greater beyond catching overlay - will definitely read that paper, especially since the dfs community is obsessed with temperature with hot weather = good offense etc

anyways, here's r2 was super swamped with some traditional work last night and up super late and only just woke up so missed the earliest waves - also haven't scored results yet but given all the low sample weirdness i'm assuming r1 was a bloodbath

general thoughts is that as we get a better sample on all these newly arrived golfers in the pool we should be getting more and more stuff that is both actionable and trustworthy

until then, we'll just keep on collecting data for both the official model results and the separate "our model likes it but the sample of data it's based upon is not big enough to trust it"

legit considering just turning the low sample into a pure fade machine a la ben the bettor, perhaps he came across his "fade these plays" system purely accidentally the same way i came across mine which so happily spits out losers whenever the sample is weak

disappointed in the diminishing returns as after a great start we seem to be drifting towards breaking even but alas +62 units is still +62 units and that's a pretty big number if i were to put on my big boy pants and really execute on this thing (albeit would have massive soul tilting swings along the way)

anway, it's a relief to finally be caught up on old tallies

what a week to only have 500 in play (the big contests all filled early so instead of 30x $25 it was 18x $8 and little to no overlay and very little cash booked so losses are fortunately kept pretty low this week)

easily my worst showing ever in dfs golf, total bloodbath



but things going exceedingly well in h2h betting going 3-1-1 for +2.04u in r2 after 4-0-5 +4u in r1
