I'm sort of surprised ( ashamed ) with myself that this just occurred to me.
When the protests were going on, everyone assumed that that would energize the Trump base, including myself, and bring people out to vote. Well. that was true. Trump, to his credit, did get 74 million votes. But what I don't think anyone really took into consideration is all those people protesting, over months on end, were highly energized to vote against Trump. All 80 million of them. Biden's Crowd size was out in the streets for months on end for everyone to see in plain view and no one saw them.
How relevant is this epiphany of mine? Probably not much but I thought it's worth thinking about.

Trump unites an otherwise divided left plus was such a polarizing figure he boosts turnout on both sides. Both moderate and leftist Dems hate Trump and it will get them out to vote to get rid of him. The left of the party isn't thrilled by Biden, but obviously sees him as a huge improvement from Trump and once Trump is gone they can pressure Biden to do progressive things, with Trump in office progressive things are dead in the water

High turnout is still bad for Republicans though, post 2000 they win in cycles when turnout is low and lose in cycles when turnout is high because there are more Dem/Dem leaning voters, but they turn out to vote less frequently. In theory 2022 should be a bad year for Dems (incumbent president half of the party thinks is too moderate) and Republicans tend to do well in lower turnout elections, but if Biden can turn out a decent chunk who knows Dems might actually have a decent cycle. Obviously a lot depends on the next two years, if Biden gets America through Covid and it's no longer a threat and the economy is booming he might do well, especially if Trump divides the R base from the sidelines. If Biden has a poor first two years though it could be a bloothbath for Dems, will be hard to read the political climate until at least early 2022 I think for betting purposes

I knew that anti Trump sentiment was high and that people who hated him were highly motivated and were going to turn out in record numbers to vote against him. I trusted the polls and all the data and was fully convinced that Trump would lose the election. And I knew that the protesters were basically anti Trump voters and that the usual right wing rhetoric of vilifying them was going to motivate Trump's base even more, but was at the same time energizing the left. I guest underestimated the impact it was going to have.
And obviously, it goes right past the Trump supporters. Because they're so smart.

Yes, I do think Ben Carson is a moron, in general. He happens to have a certain talent, that he was lucky enough to catch a few breaks in life, and realize that talent. Thanks to liberal policies that try to help underprivileged minorities. He's a brilliant brain surgeon, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's a brilliant plumber, lawyer, rocket scientist, or a brilliant lady's man. He doesn't recognize and or acknowledge the breaks he got in life, but thinks it's was all inevitable. That's why he's a moron. Nothing is inevitable in life. He could have just as easily ended up as another George Floyd. People who are good and successful in some things get delusional in thinking that they're good in everything. It's a human fallacy.
