I did both those jobs the summer after my senior year of highschool because I was worried I wouldn't be able to afford school, and I definitely made more in 20 hours a week of waiting tables than in 40 hours a week of landscaping for $8/hr. I would have just worked waiting tables, but hours were hard to come by because we were all high school kids making >$20/hr, and everyone wanted as many hours as possible.
Waiting tables is probably one of the most lucrative jobs the average high school or college student can get until they're qualified for a well paid internship or post-graduate job.
