The diving's not even the worst part tbh. The disgraceful way the players carry on after the slightest of contact is so painful to watch. It must be the only game in the world where a player can be carried off on a stretcher and you can be rolling your eyes screaming "GET UP, YOU MOTHER ****ING PIECE OF ****!", knowing he'll be doing just that in 15 seconds.

Don't compare it to hockey or football, please. You must be joking...
Theres a lot of diving hockey, I've been taught myself to take a dive in football. Acting like soccer is the only sport with diving just isn't true. The reason why theres a lot of diving in soccer (especially in the box) is because the risk/reward ratio is so high, not because we are all pussies. A bad foul gets a a player a yellow card, a great spot for a free kick, or even a PK. Yellow cards are almost never given for dives.

As for you complaint about exaggeration of pain, see diving explanation for part of it, but don't underestimate how much it hurts to take a shot to the shin. And the weird thing is that, even tho it hurts like hell for about 30s, you normally can just walk it off. If we wore any significant padding there (shinguards are lol) or if the shots to the leg werent the equivalent of karate kicks (especially at high levels) then you wouldnt see as much of this.

I find that most people who completely dismiss how physical soccer is at high levels are completely ignorant of the sport. Is it as physical as hockey or football? Of course not, but we don't get all the pads and play in a much larger area, so theres less contact. I'd love to have you play in my practices, you wouldn't last an hour.

in terms of physical stamina/toughness:
soccer > basketball >>> football/hockey >>>>>>> baseball/whatever else

stamina....maybe, don't think soccer has anything quite like football being on a 23 play drive to end the game, where all you want to do is puke as you get down in your stance, but the desire to win pushes you further.

But you do run for the entire game, so I will give you that...

As for toughness....not even ****ing close, getting kicked in teh shins, or the balls will never compare to getting the **** beaten out of you like you do every game in football, and then going out and doing it again every week, which in the case of the pro game can last for almost 5.5 months. **** even the High School season can stretch to 4.5 months with playoffs....

hope this was a level, cause otherwise it's kinda stupid

ike, the amount of diving in college soccer never seemed to be too bad to me. if that's how it was in europe I would almost be satisfied. unfortunately it's still pretty bad over here, especially in italy imo. uefa and fifa have addressed the risk/reward to diving and the changes have shown results, but I still can't watch italian teams play without cringing. take milan for example. you know I expect wusses like inzaghi to dive all the time. it bugs me sure, but whatever. but when tough guys like gattuso kick your ass and run you over one minute then a split second later go down in agony from the brush of a feather, i can't help but vomit.

anyway...

more still needs to be done, but at least it's better than it was 5 years ago.

It always amazes me when players from South America act like ****ing babies on the pitch. They come from this macho culture, but are not embarrassed by rolling around screaming like a little girl in front of millions of viewers?

stamina is pretty fair, but toughness? for that only baseball is placed correctly.

As someone who played soccer in high school, and basketball 2 hours a day at college, even in that great shape I was incredibly sore after the first time I played a competitive football game in intramurals. It's the constant sprinting. There's so much more time in basketball to go 75%.

I got really sore at soccer too, but the practices there were worse than the games where I went.

lllloooollll toughness??? Are you having a laugh? People do underestimate the physicality of soccer, but butting it above hockey and football is ******ed.

I played soccer and basketball for my school teams and basketball is a lot more demanding on your endurance imo (not saying soccer isn't demanding obviously).
12-13-2007 , 09:12 PM
Also, what position you play in soccer matters so much. But midfield is incredibly demanding stamina wise, esp when you play the whole game.
12-13-2007 , 09:14 PM
Also I think people underestimate the stamina required for football. Short sprints on your way to hitting people as hard as you can is tiring as hell. There's a very good reason (amongst others obv) a no-huddle is very effective - the defense (esp. the D-Line) is ****ing knackered by the end of the drive.

As someone who just watches a lot of sports I would estimate that hockey is the most physically demanding, rated by a combination of toughness and athleticism required.

you don't even sound english any more riall (even through the interwebs)

hockey looks like the toughest imo though i havent played it

The Mysteries of A Hockey Player

" The cockiest, dirtiest, most irresponsible group of athletes in the world. Will do anything just to be able to tell his teammates a great story in the dressing room. Live the dream until they are 35 then realize they never made it. Ladies love us, guys want to be us, we are the soul of the universe. You lace up the skates, put on the gloves, strap on the helmet, and walk on to the ice and nothing else matters. It doesn't matter that you failed a test, your girl is being a bitch, or that you got a ticket on the way there... your world is absolutely perfect for the next couple hours. Here's to faceoffs, sniping ginos, dropping apples, sudden death, living on the road, cold rinks, early mornings, breakaways, going top cheese, countless hours of practice, bag skates, puking, thousands of dollars, dangling d-men, end to end rushes, big hits, broken twigs, new skates, packing bombs, dropping the mits, wheelin' broads, coaches, adding the letter "y" to the end of everyone's last name, the word "****", pick up, tape to tape sauce, let downs, miracles and most of all - the game of Hockey. Why? Why do we skate back and forth night after night? Skating so hard we throw up. Skating so hard your heart beat rings in your head, while your lungs are grasping for air. Late nights, early mornings, Friday nights, Saturday evenings, broken bones, torn muscles and deep bruises. We skate through it all. Because we live off our adrenaline, because the game frees your spirit, because the party in the locker room is second to none, because you're invincible once you step on the ice, because one shot can make you smile all night, sniping the twine, backy shelf where momma keeps the peanut butter, the rattling of the boards, the feel of the puck, and skates carving into the ice is a rhythm to live by, because its possible to skate fast enough to leave all your worries behind. Sweat is the cologne of accomplishment. Why? Why would someone push themselves so hard the uneducated pussies always ask? HOUSE LEAGUE, A, AA, AAA, Jr.A, OHL, US COLLEGE, PRO... It's never been for the ****ing money, it's not for girls, and it's not for the fame. 'The boys' play because we ****ing love it ... Amen."
