I can't tell you too much about the other guy, but he's playing without a full stack and seems a little loose. I've seen him make a couple of really loose calls on draws.

How would you have played it differently? I can post the result if people want to see it.

IMO the hand would be easier to play with better bet sizing:

raise preflop to $3.5-$4, 2/3 pot flop and go from there. If you still get raised on such a dry board then maybe he really flopped a set (doubt it)

As played, your timid preflop raise and small flop bet induced a raise from villain which could mean many things, including weaker jacks. Since it was check/check turn it is ok to call river. But a pot bet from a loose player on the river seems to smell like JT.

I guess I played the hand timidly after the raise on the flop, because I didn't want the pot too big to get bluff-raised off if he made the move (since he would quickly be pot committed). However, would some of you have re-raised on the flop? I guess when he raised me I decided to try to keep the pot small. The check/check on the turn is what made me realize he didn't have a set.

The reason I raised small preflop was to make it easier to let go of the hand to a big re-raise out of position. I think a 4BB raise will often just get called by some with AQ/AK, but a 2.5BB raise will always get raised by them. Making the 2.5BB raise early position helps me get out of the way.

I agree I probably should have bet more on the flop (2/3), or maybe check-raised.

I know the result doesn't really matter, but here's what happened, in case you're just curious.

He is likely to call a worse jack but won't raise less than 2pair. Could also check behind a weaker jack and you miss value.
