clutch, the guy i mentioned is samoleus who was one of the biggest winners in the old 2KNL game on party and played some kind of crazy lag style. i actually did a quick search on my old db for mined hands from that game and just came up with 1,033 hands (lol sample size) from samo - sn at the time beeandtheboo - where he was playing 44/28.
admittedly this guy had a penchant for overstatement when it came to his own poker success, but numerous respected posters attested to the fact he was a massive winner in the game.
another interesting one is a highly respected (old timer) ssnl poster by the name of fimbulwinter. this is one of his classic threads:

again this is a meaningless sample size, but to get to the overall point i've been trying to make; a blanket statement that "40/25 or 40/18 is not profitable" is just flat wrong. it CAN be profitable in the right hands. it is not optimal for 99.99% of players and possibly not even profitable for most but it is not inherently unprofitable (or profitable).
if you really believe that playing 40%+ vpip, or having a certain wide gap in vpip and pfr is inherently unprofitable then you don't fully understand the importance of postflop play.
