You don't enter a ring $ amount discussion with girlfriends early in relationships. Buying an $8k ring when you get engaged has nothing to do with getting girls...plz stfu

Hah Orange was lucky enough to meet her in person. I appreciate the comment and I'll pass it along to her!

A Lambo would probably be hugely exciting, for a while. But it has nothing to do with happiness.

With a ****load of money you can get excited all day long (fast cars, adventures, new amazing experiences), but it surely won't make you happy.

girls can accurately estimate within ~3.5 minutes of meeting a guy how much money he's likely to spend on an engagement ring

it's science, look it up

To play devil's advocate, assuming that the things that make you happy are the same things that make another person happy is a bit egocentric.

In Europe everyone knows how "materialistic" America is. This pretty much sums it up
Whatever works for you guys!

We all seem to project our own views a bit too hard in this discussion. Let's just leave it at that and change the subject, shall we.

A hand of 0.25€/0.50€ hold them without limits played earlier today. No tracker software allowed on site so no stats.

UTG 47€ (fish)
MP 176€ (tight reg, something like 22/18, 6-8% 3bet?)
CO 20€ (fish obv)
Hero 160€ (regfish)
SB 49€ (drooler)
BB 50€ (capable reg)

Fish limps 0.50€ in MP, CO isolates to 2€, BTN folds, I wake up with K K and make it 6.50€, everyone folds to CO who makes it 18€, Hero calls.

First of all CO usually stays under the radar (to the point of being nitty) and we don't have any preflop dynamics between us (no 4bets during this session). I've been pretty active because of the fishes (would estimate something like 34/25 8-12% 3bet) but haven't targeted him (focusing on the fish). Would you 5bet or flat? Sizing?

My thoughts at the time were that 5betting would look really strong given that we're 300bb+ deep and generally had stayed out of each others way so even if he might flat JJ+/AK he's definitely never shipping worse, plus I can get into a lot of profitable spots postflop by flatting, even with us being OOP.

So..... flat/5bet/whatever?
06-21-2012 , 07:41 PM
flat is good. Sucks that you're out of position but folding and raising both suck so it's kinda all you're left with. Flop?

If buying a decent ring for the woman I love is materialistic then I guess I'm materialistic. FWIW I don't care too much for material things and have historically spent a ton more on fun occasions (dinners, parties, vacations etc) than on material goods because I agree that material things are a lot less fun / memorable than experiences. That said, I still wanna get the gf a nice ring because it's something she'll wear for the rest of her life, meh.
06-21-2012 , 07:44 PM
wat? co has 20?
06-21-2012 , 07:45 PM
I think MP is supposed to be the 176 stack and thus has hero covered.
06-21-2012 , 07:53 PM
Whoops sorry. Here it is corrected:

MP 47€ (fish)
CO 176€ (tight reg, something like 22/18, 6-8% 3bet?)
BTN 20€ (fish obv)
Hero 160€ (regfish)
BB 49€ (drooler)
UTG 50€ (capable reg)

UTG folds, Fish limps 0.50€ in MP, CO isolates to 2€, BTN folds, I wake up with K K in SB and make it 6.50€, everyone folds to CO who makes it 18€, Hero calls.

Anyways postflop is relatively uninteresting but here we go:

Flop (37.50€) 2 K 4
Hero checks, CO bets 20€, Hero calls

Turn (77.50€) 9
Hero checks, CO checks

River (77.50€) T
Hero?

As I said, not particularly interesting. Going to bed now, got a weekend full of partying ahead of me so I need to rest.

Do americans celebrate midsummer's eve btw?

I think I'd c/shove in hopes that he vbets AA/AK or bluffs. I don't think you get value from any hands that wouldn't bet themselves at this point so c/shove is best.

lol it's funny how live changes thought pattern for poker. FIRE AWAY CAPITAN! live. Online obviously different.
06-21-2012 , 11:04 PM
do you really think he checks back the turn w AA/AK? i doubt it.

i'd probably bet ~1/3pot and let him hero call v missed diamonds.

e: he's more likely to barrel the turn as a bluff then check back and take a hail-mary at the river too imo.

Yes. Most regs are very cautious when playing this deep. Don't act like its not true.

While this is +EV I'm still not convinced its the most +EV. I think he bets nearly the same range he calls with. Plus he probably bets larger than 1/3rd pot when he beta for value. Add in the times that he bluffs and the rare times he calls the check/shove and I believe that c/shoving is superior.

People tend to get happier with money until they hit ~$80-100k per year. That's about the amount you need to buy pretty much anything you like and not worry about money much (unless you're obsessed by big ticket items).

I do tend to think that people who earn a lot are happier because they probably enjoy their jobs. That's the reverse causation that you normally hear.
