Knife party is 2 of the people from Pendulum. Normally when people list those groups they'll also include Chase & Status.

I guess it depends what you're after from electronic music. Knife party is probably closest to some type of house. Skrillex (and I shudder to say it) to dubstep. Pendulum to D&B. I think you can say that all of them are gateway groups to the actual genres. It doesn't quite work as I don't know of much other house in the knife-party vein, and Pendulum produced some straight D&B in the first album (e.g, Slam). I therefore link you to different sub-genres of all of those. D&B is the most "energetic" but that doesn't mean it'll necessarily appeal...

House:

Dubstep:

D&B:

And just to be contrary, drumstep:

And, damnit, 600 page post but a couple of the Chase & Status tracks I love, starting with dubstep from a few years back:

Then they produced this D&B track with Jenna G:

As you can see, I can go on all day.

i'm kind of confused by your request because I treat electronic different than house (what people have shown above)/dubstep (skrillex)

here is what I guess you could consider "indie" electronic music, it's not repetitive because I'm not a big fan of repetitive either. This is older stufff.

Cut Copy, "Lights and Music"

Empire of the Sun, "Walking on a Dream"

M83 'Midnight City'

Also check out passion pit, crystal castles, m83 for similar indie electronica.

For house music, there is always your standard Calvin Harris, Benny Benassi, Afrojack, Armin Van Buren, Hardwell, Tommy Trash, etc..

here is a 2011 mix a friend made that I used to listen to a bit

holy crap.

new episode of dexter was alright

That's just pop surely Kyle? 80s style pop.

Given that most music is made electronically these days, I don't much like the US genre name either. I prefer to just say dance music. Then house, techno, dubstep, drum & bass etc are sub-genres. Then there're sub-sub-genres, all the way down.

the story line is just a bore

yeah, somewhere along those lines

this season of dexter is just ridiculous, it's like the show became a parody of itself

Just realised - electro-pop is probably the right word.

Ishkur's Guide to EDM

I don't think much of that guide. It's very US-centric and I think it has almost all of D&B wrong and some of breakbeat.

I agree with you. The ones Kyle linked are pretty much old pop songs. They're good songs, but not what I picture when I think about electronic music. To me, electronic music is stuff like dubstep, future base, trap music, and other bassy tracks like that.

fwiw the songs by Pendulum I like most are probably less D&B-y than their other stuff - i.e. Propane Nightmares, The Tempest, Salt in the Wounds, Watercolour, Crush, Witchcraft, Self vs. Self are my favorites.

Nero - liked some of their songs but going through 10 songs on their album, felt a lot like songs bled from one to the next without differentiating themselves or being super memorable, I'll listen again at some point though
Knife Party - haven't gotten to yet

Morgan Page/Kaskade - both songs are kinda nice but a little slow for me

Narrissus - I wouldn't listen to it in the car or anything, but this is decent grind/work music if I'm not focusing on it
Joker & TC - I dig the sound but it feels like it never builds to anything, pretty slow and chill
Basher - not into it
TC - I like this! Dunno if I'd add this song to my favorites or anything but it's got a big sound
C&S Eastern Jam - too subdued
C&S In Love - feels kinda like a soul or R&B song with a faster beat in the background, not quite my style

I'm terrible at talking about music but to try to describe what I like about Skrillex: it feels kinda like electronic rock music instead of just electronic music. Like, this is my favorite song so far:

It's kinda all over the place yet has a good melody at the same time, keeps up the energy the whole way through, has an identifiable beginning/middle/end (doesn't ramble, as some electronic stuff feels like it does to me, this always seems like it's going somewhere)

This is another song I love, which is a bit different and I'm not sure how to categorize, it's more orchestral:

Thanks for all the examples, it def helps to pinpoint what I do and don't like!

yeah agree

also goofy I realized we are going for different things, because I want to listen to this type of music as background chill music and you are looking for something a bit more goggoogogogogoggo style
