Brutal spot with rivered trips Brutal spot with rivered trips

Hey ssnl! I've been getting back into the game a bit more but moved down for now since I'm feeling rusty. I thought this was a tough hand though, villain is a taggish 21/16 type and doesn't seem overly aggressive over the sample I have with him.

I think my line is relatively standard overall. I prefer checking the river because I think a good portion of his range are draws and it looks like I'm giving up since the ace is a bad bluff card. I also think an ace that I beat will more than likely bet anyways.

I was planning on snap calling any bet but the overbet shove caught me off guard. Am I ever good here?

loooooong time no see

this is a pretty tough spot. i guess i'd call alot of the time but i wouldn't like it. i'd expect him to raise the flop with A7/A8 alot of the time given the texture of this board. same with any set.

I think AQ raises turn given texture. The only hand here that beats you is AK.

Given that the shove has reasonable F/E, i expect to see a lot of bricked combos here.

Yeah ditto man.

I had pretty much the same though process as you did - not a whole lot of hands seem to beat me considering two pair or better likely raises on this board somewhere. So I ended up calling and lost to AQ.

In hindsight though I think I would have folded simply because of the overbet shove. I think that's a real sign of strength from a random tag player who has no history with me.

I think calling is best, even though it sure feels like it sucks. I would expect him to raise better somewhere along the way.

Also, I see a lot more overbetting in 100nl these days, mostly with the nuts, but sometimes with air. I would think it would not be a terrible play with a bricked draw or even a random decent made hand that now thinks there is no way you do not bet river with any ace.

I think betting the river would be mandatory in his shoes after I check that river (which is why I checked obv), I'm just not sure why he would decide to overbet shove instead of making a regular bet. I'm calling and folding with the same hands to a shove as I am with a normal sized bet, so by overbet shoving with a bluff he loses way more when I have a hand than he needs to. On the other hand if he does have the nuts an overbet is good because I'm probably snap calling with trips after a drawy board blanks.

An interesting hand for sure, though.

Hmm not sure I agree with your checking river...If he has aq, ak i belive he repops you preflop.

Only possible is he hit his set 77 or 88 and made the boat.

I prefer bet, bet, bet.
