The question was about Vodka (and expanded into other light colored alcohols), and its always handy being able to make drinks to sorority girls..

Beer, cognac, whiskey and Wine is obvs different posts. I will admit that I am/was pretty much an anything goes - drinker and still a winefish, that drank mostly Norwegian moonshine from the age 14-19 (4x cheaper and easier to get hold of when your under 20 in northern Norway). Its obvs less pure then any industrial vodka so any vodka coming out of a factory tastes like water in comparision. Think 92% or 94% is the strongest we got hold of (96% is the holy grail to make but think they we bought from never figured out how to destilate it maximum strong), but most of the time it was watered down to 60% or even 40%. The only thing Ive found thats comperable for the stronger versions is real absinthe. These could be (found them online) standard picture 1 and picture 2 from my youth. Ive not been drinking it in many years for several reasons.

Blopp - surely it is an error to be drinking plain old JD blend? I prefer the Single Barrel variety and think it is a much smoother and therefore a much more enjoyable drink. Also, any preference in sweet white? Also surprised there is no love for Irish Whiskey ITT.

Irish Whiskey is not very popular in USA and Western Europe afaik. It's extremely popular in Bulgaria though (Bushmills, Tullamore, Jameson, Paddy, Clontarf) with Bushmills being the number one brand around here. It's great for partying cause it has a mild taste but I prefer scotch if I want to enjoy a rich flavoured drink at home.

Maybe you could suggest another quality Irish brand?

The Bushmills labels are the best by far, imo. At the everyday end of the market their Black Bush label is top notch. After that Middleton labels are top class but pricey.

On the semi related topic, If any of you guys are into Whiskey, Golf and Tourism then visit the town of Bushmills, Stay here, visit the Bushmills distillery, visit the Giants Causeway which is 2miles away, go play golf in Royal Portrush golf club, then when leaving here stop off at the Carrick A Rede Rope Bridge and take the coast road back to Dublin, it is a lovely drive and if anybody is looking for a nice way to spend a long weekend then I would recommend this.

I would do what you did, except maybe in a little bit less of a condescending way. ie the sentiment I would be expressing "I feel really bad but can't give a compulsive gambler a loan. For all I know, this is just a ploy to make me feel bad for you, and you'll just gamble whatever I give you right back. If you are risking being kicked out over poker, you need to give it up permanently. I think you should come clean with your parents, and tell them you have a gambling problem and are going to seek help (gambler's anonymous or therapy or whatever)"

It's somewhat disturbing to think that unless you just reg battle / bumhunt the bumhunters hu or at nosebleeds, a substantial part of the $ we earn is derived at the expense of degenerate gamblers so we are essentially serving a drug dealer-esque function. I guess it is easy enough to rationalize that away by saying we are not encouraging them to play at all and they would still play and lose their $ even if we weren't the ones to take it.

There are also many well-respected people who are capitalizing off gambling addicts misery to a much much greater extent. To take the drug dealing analogy a little further, I'd say we're selling eighths of bud and someone like steve wynn is giving out free samples of hard drugs.

What's much more disturbing to me is that I seem to have reverted to my own degen tendencies the last few months, and despite writing a whole 10k word post on how not to be a tilting action junkie, I haven't been able to string together more than 2 hrs of consecutive play where I don't violate 5+ key things I advised against in that post.
