Defending rundown to large 3/4bets Defending rundown to large 3/4bets

Hi all,

Just wondering what the point is to defending a rundown to a huge 3/4bet when the opponent with AAxx and managed to get ~35-40% of his stack in pre and is insta shoving any flop...

I understand the advantage of defending to a single 3bet in position when stack to pot ratio is still high, but I cannot for the life of me understand why seemingly solid regulars feel the need to defend their rundowns when their opponent put most of their stack in pre.

Ex.
100bbs effective
UTG opens 3.5bb, MP calls, BTN 3bets to 10.5bbs, BB 4bets to 40bbs, fold, fold,
BTN calls?

The way I see it, the player with the rundown needs to hit a piece to get it in - im assuming he's getting it in with any pair.. But he will still have to fold if the board misses him completely and has just thrown away 30bbs to defend 10.5bbs.

Having position is pretty useless imo if there is <pot size bet left on the flop.. Anyone know why regs constantly defend in these spots with rundowns, the only reason I can find is to tilt the other player. Thoughts?

Often rundowns have 40%-45% against AA** hands, depending on whether it is suited or not, and how connected/share cards with the AA** hand.

So 3 betting and folding with 40%-45% equity would just be terrible. The AA** will most likely shove any flop, and you can choose which ones you want to commit on.

Obviously if you have an A in your hand, or a pair, then your in much worse shape, and its an easier fold to the 4 bet.

Well, it's probably EV neutral against the aces here. But if the guy did not have aces, or if the aces did not 4-bet, or if three people were in the pot, then it is a good situation for the rundown.

FWIW I would prefer to 3-bet about half-pot as BTN, it serves to buy us the initiative, while encouraging multiway action and leaving as much stacks behind as possible for the flop, the conditions where rundowns thrive.
